Brad Hofelich had a hat-trick to lead the Wildcats to the State Quarter Finals. Ryan Baxer scored at the beginning of the third to put Novi ahead 3-1.  MORE   MORE

Novi Hockey stays alive in the playoffs with a 10-3 victor over Ann Arbor Huron

Alex Cai and Alec Wells each scored two goals to lead the Wildcats Thursday evening. Cai, Fegert and Baxter scored in the first to make it 3-2 Novi. Tewilliager, Fegert, Wells and Cyr scored in the second to make it 7-3 Novi after two.  Cai and Wells scored again in the third, followed by a goal from Hofelich to seal the deal. Goalie Josh Richardson was stellar in net, stopping 16 shots.  The team is now 16-8-2 for the season.

Novi loses close one to Northville in OT 5-4

In an exciting Baseline rivalry game, the Mustangs scored in overtime to secure the victory and a 2-1 regular season record over Novi Saturday. Brad Hofelich started things off for Novi with a goal early in the first. Bryan Fegert scored a short-handed goal and the Mustangs added one to make it 2-1 Novi after one. Hofelich scored again to make it 3-1 before the Mustangs scored three in a row to make it a serious 4-3 game. Alec Wells tied things up in the third, sending the contest into overtime. Northville's Kyle Abraham scored halfway through OT to give the Mustangs the victory.

Novi ties things up with Plymouth 2-2

After a score-less first period it was 2-0 Plymouth after two, but Novi evened things up in the third on goals by Ryan Baxter and Brad Hofelich. Brennan Martin had two assists.

Novi ices Salem 8-3

Brad Hofelich had a hat-trick to lead the Wildcats to a solid 8-3 victory over Salem. Captain Nik Tewilliager started things off with a goal early in the first, and Brennan Martin also scored to give the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead. Ryan Baxter scored two in the second, as Salem managed to gain three making it 4-3 after two. Hofelich scored his hat-trick in the third as Salem was plagued with penalities, and Nik Tewilliager scored on the open net to seal the deal for Novi.

The Wildcats came from a one point deficit early in the third on goals by Bryan Fegert, Jake Cyr and Brendan Wexler. Earlier goals were from Brad Hofelich and Wexler. Josh Richardson had ten saves.

Jake Cyr had a huge night with four goals to lead the Wildcats to victory. Alec Wells, Brad Hofelich, Captain Nick Tewilliager (2) and Bryan Fegert also scored for the Wildcats.

Livonia Stevenson ices Novi Hockey 5-2

Despite incurring two big penalties in the third period, Stevenson managed to hold on to their lead to ice Novi 5-2. The Wildcats almost caught up 4-3 with six minutes remaining, but a goal was disallowed due to a high stick. Alec Wells and Pat Wojtylo.

Novi Hockey defeats Berkley 5-4 in OT

Ryan Turner scored the game-winner just a minute into overtime to secure the victory. The #5 ranked Wildcats were behind 3-1 to #4 ranked Berkley after one, but played solid puck in the second and third. Senior Alec Wells, junior Alex Cai and senior Brad Hofelich also scored for the Wildcats.

Novi, Brighton Hockey skate to 2-2 tie

Bryan Fegert scored in the first period, and Brighton had two goals in the second to take the lead. But Brad Hofelich put one between the posts late in the third to tie things up. There were plenty of penalties to go around in a very physical game.

Novi Hockey catches the Mustangs 4-2

Brad Hofelich had two goals and two assists to lead the Wildcats to a Baseline victory over Northville in front of a packed house Friday evening. Bryan Fegert and Brendan Wexler also scored for Novi. Josh Richardson was stellar in net, stopping 25 shots. It was a clean game with few penalties.

Novi Hockey takes down ice-cold Hartland 6-4

After losing to Harland last year in regionals and falling to Hancock last week, the Wildcats played with a vengeance Wednesday. It was 6-2 after two before Hartland clawed their way back with two goals in the third.

Novi came on strong in the third with three unanswered goals (Baxter, Fegert and Wexler). Austin Petty handled the net for the Wildcats.

Novi High School names Mark Vellucci the new Wildcat Hockey Head Coach

It was announced this morning that Novi High School has selected Mark Vellucci, 41 of Novi, as the new Head Hockey Coach. Vellucci was the head coach for Farmington since 2001. He has many years of hockey experience, including stints in the NAHL, COHL and ECHL from '89 - '94. Mark's brother Mike is the head coach of the Plymouth Whalers.

Vellucci will be joined by long-time Wildcat assistant coaches Jim Lewis and Travis Malott, and long-time team manager Donna Malott. Ms. Donna has been with the team since it's inception.

Following a nearly scoreless first period, Curtis Herzog set the 'Cats in motion with a goal at the 1:13 mark. Nolan Valleau, Tyler Perpich and Taylor Howell scored three goals in just over one minute in the second to make it a 4-1 hockey game. Joey Ferriss, Perpich and Tyler Manning scored in the third to seal the Mustangs' fate. Michael Pesendorfer earned the shutout, stopping 16 shots to Novi's 49 shots.

Opening Weekend: A win and a tie

This past weekend, the Wildcats officially opened the 08-09 season with a win and a tie in the Metro High School Invitational. In the first game, the 'Cats tied Rochester United 3-3. It was 3-0 Novi after one, but Rochester came back strong in the second with two unanswered goals. Another in the third sent the game into a scoreless overtime. In the second game, Novi defeated Macomb Dakota 3-1. Stevenson, Northville and South Lyon went undefeated in the tournament.

The Muskegon Mona Shores Sailors (20-8) took the lead just 27 seconds into the game and shut-out Novi to win the State Semi-Final game 3-0 Thursday at the Compuware Sports Arena. Wildcat goalie Kevin Michalzuk played a great game, recording 27 saves for Novi (13-13-3).

Wildcats sink Pirates 4-1

After a big win at the Trenton Showcase against Utica Eisenhower, the Wildcats faced KVC rival, the Pinckney Pirates on Monday night.

Novi took a commanding 3-0 lead into the 2nd period with goals by Andrew Haggerty, and two by Kyle Potocki. Assists went to Adam Szajner, Robert Lewis, Jeff Donohue (2), and Shawn Baxter.  Pinckney was able to get back into the game with a goal in the second period, but Kevin Michalzuk came up with some huge saves to keep the Cats in the game the rest of the way. Robert Lewis added an unassisted empty net goal to cap off the win.

The Wildcats who face South Lyon and U of D this week at home. Friday night is last regular season home game against U of D will also be Senior night which honors all Senior Novi Varsity Hockey players.

In an exciting KVC conference game on Wednesday night, the Novi Wildcats faced off against the Lakeland Eagles before a packed house at the Novi Ice Arena. The Wildcats dominated play early but were unable to score any goals in the first period due to some great goaltending by the Eagles Mitch Stuble. The Wildcats Joe DeNova turned away everything Lakeland could throw at him through the first two periods including a spectacular save on a clear breakaway in the 2nd stanza.  MORE

The Wildcats faced-off against state-ranked Howell (currently ranked #9 in Div I) Wednesday, and although it was an even game on the ice, Howell managed to come out with a 4-2 victory.

Novi goals were scored by Craig Howell and Kyle Potocki. Kevin Michalzuk handled Novi's net with skill. Howell's goalie also played a great game, keeping the Highlanders in the game through all three periods while frustrating many Wildcat scoring opportunities.

In one of the most exciting games of the season, Novi and Rochester Stoney Creek (6th ranked in Div 2) skated to a 2-2 tie. It was a great game to watch, as both teams played very hard for the victory. After a scoreless first period, a goal for each team made it 1-1 after two and two more goals made it 2-2 in the end. Goals were scored by Robert Lewis and Ryan Richardson. "Joe Denova played excellent in net making several key saves in the 2 - 2 tie," noted Coach Malott following the game.

The game was tied up 2-2 half-way through the second period until Novi opened up the scoring with 4 consecutive goals. The 'Cats were ahead 6-2 to start the third period, and would finish the game with a 6-4 win. Goals were scored by Jeff Donohue (2), Robert Lewis, Kyle Potocki, Scott Eberline and Adam Szajner. Kevin Michalzuk played in net.

Wildcats defeat Hartland 3 - 2

The Wildcats defeated the Hartland Eagles 3-2 Friday evening. It was a back and forth game that featured all of Novi's special teams. Wildcats goals were scored by Robert Lewis, Mark Bernier and Jeff Donohue.

"We put it all together tonight. Kevin Michalzuk played a great game and made some key saves that gave us the opportunity to win the game. Our players fought through everything that was put in front of them, and truly deserved to win this game. All of the Novi coaches are very proud of the way the guys battled for the win," noted Coach Malott following the victory.

The Wildcats controlled much of the game, but two strong Milford goals in the first period, and two more in the final moments of the game, sealed the 'Cats fate. Jeff Donohue scored Novi's goal to make it a 1-2 game with 9 minutes left in the 3rd period, and although the 'Cats played a great game they just couldn't find the back of Milford's net in the final minutes of the game.

Cats battle back; Houghton 3-2

After falling behind 3-0 after two periods of play against Houghton, the Wildcats had some catching up to do. Shawn Baxter and Ryan Richardson lead the way with goals in the third period, while Joe DeNova kept Houghton at bay.

The Wildcats make the all-day journey home today, and take on school, Milford and Hartland next week.

After a score-less first period, Calumet came back with a vengeance to overtake the Wildcats 6-1 Friday in the heart of the U.P. Jeff Donohue got the Novi goal, assisted by Ryan Richardson and Andrew Haggerty.

The Wildcats take on Houghton Saturday afternoon, and make the 12 hour trek home Sunday.

Conference rival Brighton defeated Houghton 3-0.

Wildcats catch South Lyon Lions 6 - 1

The Wildcats out-played the South Lyon Lions, and earned a solid 6-1 victory Tuesday on the road. Goals were scored by Jeff Donohue, Anthony Gasparotto, Andrew Haggerty and Robert Lewis. Adam Szajner had two. Kevin Michalzuk handled the net, keeping the Lions at bay.

Coach Malott noted, "we put a whole game together and it showed. We played very well tonight. We are very pleased with the way our guys played."

The 'Cats have some time off now before traveling to the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a mid-winter tourney January 5th.

Wildcats fall to Brighton 5-4

The Wildcats and the Bulldogs had things tied up 2-2 after two periods, but Brighton managed to get 3 goals and went up 5-2 early in the third. Novi fought back and got two goals to make it 5-4. Scoring for Novi was Scott Eberline, Andrew Haggerty, Shawn Baxter and Mark Bernier. Kevin Michalzuk played in net.

"We took 3 minutes off and it cost us three goals. For most of the game I thought we out played them. We just can't seem to get any breaks right now." commented Coach Jung following the game.

Novi and Lakeland skated to a 3-3 tie Wednesday, as the Eagles came back with a minute left in the game to tie things up. Novi was hurt early with penalties, and came back from a 2-1 deficit before Lakeland regained the momentum. Scoring for Novi was Art Ferris, Ryan Richardson and Andrew Haggerty.

Wildcats fall to Highlanders 5-0

The Wildcats fell to the Howell Highlanders Friday evening 5-0 at Novi. Coach Malott explained, "With the new rules, special teams are extremely important and we didn't execute on either the power play or the penalty kill. Howell played a strong game and their goaltender was excellent.

Novi takes on Baseline-rival Northville Saturday at 6pm.

Pinckney came out hitting, defeating the Wildcats 6-3 at Novi Wednesday evening. Scoring for Novi was Scott Eberline and Robert Lewis (2). Joe Denova started in net, and Kevin Michalzuk finished the game between the posts.

"Pinckney came out and wanted it more. They beat us in every aspect of the game from top to bottom. In this league you have to come to play every night or else you are going to get beat and we didn't come to play," explained Coach Malott following the game.

The Wildcats won their second pre-season scrimmage Saturday with a 7-1 victory over Okemos at the Novi Ice Arena. Goals were scored by Jeff Donohue, Tom Dircks, Ryan Richardson, Erik Aepelbacher, Adam Szajner, Shawn Baxter and Andrew Haggerty. Kevin Michalzuk and Joe DeNova split time in the goal.

New Ice Hockey Coach Named
Former pro Todd Krygier now a Wildcat

Novi High School today announced the hiring of Todd Krygier as the new Head Ice Hockey Coach.

Coach Krygier received his BS Degree in Business Administration from the University of Connecticut. While studying to receive his MBA, Todd was drafted and began a professional hockey career that led him to the Hartford Whalers, (1989-91) the Washington Capitals, (1991-94) the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, (1994-96) and finally back to Washington, where he competed against the Detroit Red Wings in the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals.

In addition to his collegiate and professional career, Todd has been active in youth hockey, serving on the Novi Youth Hockey Association Board of Directors, working as Coaching Education and Travel Director and as a head travel coach. He has also worked with the USA Hockey Association as an Ice Hockey Coaching Consultant since 2000.

Todd and his wife Kim reside in Novi with their five children Brock, Natalie, Grace, Cole and Christian.

Coaches Dan Phelps, John Smith and Dennis Gagnon announced yesterday they will be leaving the Wildcats after eight highly successful seasons. They will be coaching the Junior B Michigan Ice Dogs starting next season.

The entire Wildcat family wishes them the best of luck with their new team, and thanks them for their dedication to Novi Wildcat Hockey since 1998.

In exciting fashion, the Novi Wildcats beat U of D in overtime 3-2 in an exhilarating come from behind rally.  Tom Ciaverilla and Kyle Mouch scored Novi's first two goals, and it was senior captain Steve Rousseau who put one between the pipes for the OT victory. Ryan Fox, Ciaverilla, Greg Morisette and Ryan Timar all had assists. Brad Clos was in net and played a great game.

On the tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Saturday hockey is a really big deal. Everyone comes out to watch the games, as the regulars surround the boards to watch up close and personal. The Novi Wildcats gave the Yoopers what they came for, some excellent hockey action in an overtime battle against the Hancock Bulldogs.

The Wildcats and Bulldogs skated to a 2-2 overtime tie. Scoring for Novi was Tom Ciaverilla off a Steve Rousseau pass, and Shamus Finerty unassisted.

Novi takes the long bus ride back home Sunday. On Wednesday they face the Milford at the Novi Ice Arena.

On their fifth annual trip to the home of professional hockey in America, the tip of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Novi out-shot the Calumet Copper Kings 40-25, but the Cats fell to the Copper Kings 6-3 the opening night of the annual U.P. High School Hockey Tournament.

Steve Rousseau was on fire with two goals and an assist, Tom Ciaverilla scored and notched an assist, and role player Ryan Timar earned two assists in the battle.

Saturday evening, the Wildcats take on Hancock, then take the 10 hour bus ride back to Novi on Sunday morning.

The Lions scored three goals in the first period, one in the second, and five in the third period to dominate the Wildcats at the Novi Ice Arena Wednesday evening. Novi had many scoring opportunities dashed by the Lion goalie's outstanding performance, who made 37 saves. The Wildcats played a level-headed game, with only one penalty to South Lyon's six.

Wildcat Hockey Falls to Brother Rice 6-1
Game closer than score indicates; shots: 29-24

Losing in high school playoffs is always tough. It's sudden death - the last game of the season. The Wildcats fell to the Brother Rice Warriors at Livonia's Eddie Edgar Arena Monday evening 6-1, but the game was closer than the score indicates. A lot closer for most of the game.

Brother Rice only out-shot Novi 29-24, as the Warrior goalie appeared nearly invincible at times. Novi's Justin Ruccolo was also solid in net, as he was hit over and over with a barrage of Brother Rice attempts.

"I can honestly say that our players prepared themselves for this game. They were focused and ready. They put a great effort forward, but we came up short," explained Coach Phelps.

The Warriors got on the board first at 5:52 of the first period, and out-shot Novi by only one, to make it a 1-0 hockey game after one period of very fast action.

In a scrappy second period, the Warriors scored on a net scramble at 11:49, and Novi continued to pound the Warriors net. With just over a minute to play, the Warriors scored again as the puck took a bad hop past Ruccolo and caught the upper-corner of the net: 3-1 Brother Rice after two periods.

The Warriors also scored near the beginning of the third period on a two-on-one play, and then again on a power play, before Novi's Tom Ciaverilla caught a pass from Jon Hamblin and Steve Rousseau to put Novi on the board. The Warriors managed one more goal with five minutes left to seal Novi's fate for the season.

Novi ends the season with a 12-9-4 record, 5-5-3 in conference action. In the last five games, the Cats were clicking with a 4-1-0 record.

Coach Phelps noted following the game "I am very proud of our players and the hard work that they displayed on a great season. Success is something that comes from within, and as a coach, you measure things from how you started the season to how it concluded. I can honestly say that these players made great strides and accomplished a great deal this season with some big performances and wins. As a group, they developed into a solid unit and a great team - both on and off the ice. As with every season, I hate to see it come to a conclusion. But as I look back, it was a pleasure to coach each and every one of our players and we look forward to a strong unit next season."

Indeed next season is already looking up. Although Novi will be losing such big Cats as seniors Brett Jaussi, Mark Eberline, Zach Flavin, R.J. Makoski, Justin Ruccolo, Chris Zarem, Jon Hamblin, Mike Berger and Sean Hogan, there are some juniors taking over who will definitely rule the ice next season.

That includes the likes of go-to guy Captain Ryan Fox, Steve "in-your-face" Rousseau, Tom "try-to-stop-me" Ciaverilla, Mike "D" Arnold, Greg "catch-me-if-you-can" Morisette, Brett "the-wall" -czak, Brad "this-net-is" Clos-ed, and Kyle "get-out-of-my-way" Mouch.

Get ready folks - next season is already looking good for these Cats!
 

Wildcats Take on Brother Rice Monday

The Novi Wildcats and take on Brother Rice Monday at the Eddie Edgar Arena in Livonia. Face-off time is 8:30pm.

If you want to see more hockey action, arrive early. At 5:55pm Monday, Plymouth takes on Walled Lake Central, and the winner of that game meets the winner of Novi vs. Brother Rice at 5:55pm on Thursday. Then, the winner of that game takes on the winner of Northville / Livonia Franklin / WL Western / WL Northern Friday at 6:00pm - all at Eddie Edgar.

The Eddie Edgar Arena is located west off Farmington Road, south of Five Mile. Take Farmington Road to Lyndon (MAP).

Seniors pound Milford on Senior Night

The Wildcats pounded the visiting Milford Mavericks Wednesday evening on Senior Night - the final home game of the season for Novi - and came away with a well deserved 8-3 victory.  Novi has never lost a game on Senior Night, and this year was definitely no exception.

Junior Steve Rousseau started things off in the first period, scoring off a Brett Jaussi pass - his 7th goal in 7 games. Novi got snookered by Milford's Snook brothers to make it a 1-1 hockey game.

That's when the Cats came back with a vengeance. Three big seniors - three big goals.  Scoring for Novi was Mark Eberline, Jaussi, and R.J. Makoski.  Rousseau added another goal with just over a minute to go in the period, and Milford headed to the dressing room down 5-1 after two periods of play.

In the third period, Milford scored first, but Jaussi had had enough.  He scored two goals in the third period to earn a hat trick for his final high school game at Novi.  Also scoring for Novi in the third was senior Mike Berger.

Junior Steve Rousseau was all over Milford, notching 7 points and junior Tom Ciaverilla added 5 points.  Senior goalie Justin Ruccolo was as always the wall in front of Novi's net, and senior defenseman Zach Flavin stymied the Mavs all evening.

That's it for the Cats at the Novi Ice Arena this season.  Next week, Regionals take place at the Eddie Edgar in Livonia.  Novi takes on Brother Rice at 8:30 p.m. Monday.  The winner of that game plays the winner of Plymouth vs. Walled Lake Central at 5:55 p.m. Thursday.

Novi defeats yet another "ranked team"

The Wildcats took on #8 ranked (Div I) Livonia Churchill at the Novi Ice Arena in a rare Saturday afternoon game, and game away with a 4-3 victory - the second time the downed a "ranked team" in the past week.  The Cats tied #4 ranked (Div I) Clarkston, and defeated #8 ranked (Div II) Gross Ile, last weekend.

In the first period, hockey fans were treated to plenty of action as the score went back and forth.  Shamus Finnerty and Kyle Mouch scored for Novi, but Livonia also managed two goals to make it an exciting 2-2 game after one period of play - who needs the NHL?

After a score-less second, Mike Berger and Steve Rousseau put the puck between the posts, and Livonia managed another goal, to make it a 4-3 Wildcat victory. 

Mike Berger coming back from an injury, had the game-winning goal, and it was Rousseau's sixth goal in six games.  Zach Flavin was solid on defense and notched two assists in the process.  Justin Ruccolo was solid in net.

"It was a great team effort," stated Coach Smith following the game.

Novi takes on the Milford Mavericks Wednesday at the Novi Ice Arena, and it's also Senior Night.  Face-off is 6:00 p.m.  This is the last regular game of the season, and the last game at the Novi Ice Arena for the season.  Regionals start next week at Livonia's Eddie Edgar.
 

Wildcats Down Hartland Eagles 4-2

Novi High School may be on winter break this week, but these Cats sure weren't. Novi out-skated, out-shot, and out-played the Hartland Eagles to take home a 4-2 victory Wednesday. Junior Steve Rousseau scored his fifth goal in five games, while senior captain Brett Jaussi was on a mission, adding two goals.

"I told Steve when we made the decision to move him on the wing that he was going to explode like Mt. St. Helen's, and sure enough he is making me look good," said Coach Smith.

In the first period, Novi scored twice on goals from Brett Jaussi and Shamus Finnerty.  After a score-less second, Hartland scored twice, and it was Rousseau, and Jaussi again, scoring for Novi to ensure the victory.

"Brett played with a heavy heart, he was on a mission tonight, scoring 2 beautiful goals," explained Coach Zarem.  Jaussi and his older brother Brian, a former Hockey Cat, were close friends of former Wildcat Nick Mainella, 20, who passed away suddenly Tuesday (RELATED NEWS).

Big senior R. J. Makoski and junior Tom Ciaverilla each earned two assists for the evening, and Wildcat goalie Justin Ruccolo was solid in net.

Head Coach Dan Phelps stated, "I am very happy with the way we composed ourselves.  We let Hartland beat themselves with a parade to the sin-bin. Our boys did a great job of ignoring Hartland's attempts to lure us to the penalty box by not retaliating.  Once again, Justin Ruccolo was stealer."

The Hockey Cats are, as usual, peaking at the right time, not losing a game in the last five and improving their overall record to 10-8-4 for the season.  This Saturday the Cats take on Livonia Churchill at 1pm at Novi, then meet the Milford Mavericks Wednesday at 6pm.  That's the last regular game of the season, and Senior Night.

Coming off a hard-fought tie against #4 (Div 1) ranked Clarkston Friday at the ShowCase Tournament in Trenton, the Wildcats defeated #8 (Div 3) ranked Grosse Ile 2-1 Saturday in another hard-fought battle down-river. With injured forward Mike Berger and flu-ridden Steve Rousseau out of the lineup, the Cats prevailed with a gritty performance from all.

After being down 1-0 after two periods of play, Novi's Tom Ciaverilla capitalized on a turn-over deep in the Gross Ile zone to even things up early in the third. With the game tied 1-1, Novi was penalized for a two minute minor with 1:40 to play in the game.

On the penalty kill, Captain Ryan Fox fleeced the Gross Ile point man and went on a 130 ft. breakaway and roofed the Gross Ile goalie with 51 seconds to play - the game winning goal from Novi's "go-to guy."

The Wildcat penalty kill was perfect for the weekend,  going 10 for 10 and not allowing a single goal against in two games.  Wildcat goalie Justin Ruccolo was again stellar in net, ensuring the Wildcat's victory even through the Cats were out-shot 27-16.

Coach Smith noted of Ryan Fox's performance, "I was extremely happy for Ryan - that was a huge goal for him. He has been one of our hardest working and most consistent players game-in and game-out since he came to our program last season as a sophomore. He earns everything he gets."

The Hockey Wildcats are now 9-8-4 for the season, and 3-1-1 in the last five games.  The Cats head to Hartland Wednesday for a conference game, then take on Livonia Churchill next Saturday at 1:00pm at the Novi Ice Arena.
 

Hockey Cats Tie Clarkston 2-2 at Showcase

When the pressure's on, these Cats can play hockey. Play they did Friday at the Showcase Tournament in Trenton.  Novi tied the Clarkston Wolves in a hard-fought battle, 2-2. Clarkston is ranked #4 in Division I.

Clarkston got on the board first in the first period.  In the second period, Steve Rousseau scored his fourth goal of the past four games, and senior Mark Eberline added another.  The Wolves got one in too, making it an exciting 2-2 hockey game after two.

In the third, both teams struggled to gain the advantage, and the victory.  Novi goalie Justin Ruccolo stopped 17 shots in that third period, keeping the Wolves at bay.

"We put together one of best games of the season in all 3 zones of the ice," noted Coach John Smith following the game, "and Justin Ruccolo was phenomenal between the pipes, returning from surgery, and making 27 of 29 saves - 17 in the third period alone."  Well said Coach!

Saturday, the Wildcats take on Grosse Ile at 3:00 p.m. at the Kennedy Recreation Center in Trenton.  They'd better make nice to Grosse Ile - Novi's new Superintendent, Peter Dion, is from Grosse Ile.  Mr. Dion - who are you cheering for Saturday?
 

Wildcats Catch South Lyon Lions 5 - 2

The Wildcat offense, and defense, was on fire Wednesday evening at the Novi Ice Arena, hitting the South Lion goalie with shot after shot.  Five of those shots got past him, as Novi earned a 5-2 victory over the Lions.  Big defenseman Zach Flavin was all over the Lions, offensively and defensively.

Novi fans also observed the return of Justin Ruccolo, who had been out for a couple weeks with an injury.  Ruccolo was stellar on his first night back.

After a score-less and chippy first period, things turned to Novi's favor in the second period as Mark Eberline and Zach Flavin each scored unassisted in the second period - Flavin on a power play.

The Lions growled, briefly, at the start of the third period when they scored just 16 seconds in.  But it was R.J. Markowski and Steve Rousseau scoring for the Cats to extend the lead.  It was Rousseau's third goal in the past three games.

The Lions managed to sneak one more between Novi's pipes before Brett Jaussi shot one all the way across the ice to seal their fate: 5-2 Novi.

The Wildcats are now 8-8-3 for the season, and on the road this weekend at the Showcase Tourney in Trenton.  They head to Hartland next Wednesday.
 

Wildcats Over University of Detroit Jesuit 5-3
Strong second period, confident play, wins game

The Wildcats soundly defeated the University of Detroit Jesuit at the Novi Ice Arena Friday evening with an impressive offensive performance.  The Cats were running on all cylinders, and played a fast and smooth game in what has become a great annual contest with the U of D.

In the first period, Steve Rousseau got on the board with an assist from Brett Jaussi and Tom Ciaverilla three minutes into the game.  Shamus Finnerty put one between the posts minutes later to make it 2-0 after one period of action.

In the second period, U of D got on the board first.  "Jonny Roller" Hamblin came back with a goal of his own two minutes later of a Mike Arnold pass.  U of D scored again before Jaussi had enough - he scored two goals in the last minute of the second period, one at the buzzer, with assists from Ciaverilla, Arnold and Alex Malott.  It was 5-2 Novi after two.

U of D managed one goal in the third period.  They tried hard to catch up, but a bench minor for too many men on the ice, and another penalty put them down two men with just two minutes to go, sealing their fate.

Brad Clos had several great saves during the evening, and Zach Flavin was especially strong on the "D", frustrating U of D throughout the game.

Novi and the U of D have played four times in the last four year, with Novi winning 3 of those games.  U of D won last year, 5-0.  Novi is now 7-8-3 for the season.

The Wildcats take on the South Lyon Lions Wednesday at Novi, then head to Trenton for the Showcase Tournament Friday and Saturday.

The Wildcats lost a close one to Brighton, 5 - 4, last evening.  Scoring for the Wildcats was Mark Eberline, Brett Jaussi, Steve Rousseau, and Kyle Mouch.  Tom Ciaverilla notched 3 assist points in the game, and Ryan Fox had one assist.

Hockey Falls to East Grand Rapids 4-0
Pioneers come out flying in first period

East Grand Rapids came off the road flying Friday evening, scoring at the beginning, middle and end of the first period to take a 3 - 0 lead early in the game.  The Pioneers held on to that lead, and after a scoreless second period put one more into the net in the third period to take home a 4 - 0 victory.

Next week, the Hockey Cats travel to Brighton Wednesday, and take on U of D Friday evening at Novi.
 

Hockey Wildcats Fall to Eagles 4 - 3
Lakeland gets big goals at start of first, third

As the great Bill Gadsby once said, "half the goals scored in a hockey game are luck."  It seemed that luck wasn't with the Wildcats Wednesday evening at the Novi Ice Arena, when Lakeland managed to get two goals, each less than a minute into the first and third periods, to take home a victory.

Just 37 seconds into the first period, Lakeland scored.  In the second period, Tom Ciaverilla lifted one up between the posts off a Mark Eberline pass, with an assist from Ryan Fox, to even things up.

Lakeland scored 30 seconds into the third period to take the lead, and then again less than a minute later.  Novi scored two goals, Ciaverilla from Eberline, and then Eberline from Ciaverilla, to even things up 3-3.

With just 1:46 to go in the game, Lakeland scored, and that's where the scoreboard stayed for the remainder of the game.

The Wildcats host East Grand Rapids Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. at the Novi Ice Arena.

Novi and Howell Skate to 3 - 3 Tie
Howell starts strong, fizzles as Cats take over

Novi was again playing catch-up Wednesday, as they took on the Howell Highlanders at the Grand Oaks Ice Arena in Livingston County.  Howell started strong with 3 goals in the first period, but fizzled after that.

In the second period, Brett Jaussi scored with an assist from Chris Zarem and Tom Ciaverilla.  Then, Ciaverilla scored off a Zarem pass.  Jaussi scored again the third period to tie things up, with an assist from Mike Arnold. 

Zarem was all over the Highlanders while making some solid passes to lead the Wildcats to victory, Ciaverilla was a force to be reckoned with, and Jaussi was a team-leading scoring machine who came through just when the Cats need him the most.

Justin Ruccolo was solid in net, holding the Highlanders down throughout the second and third periods and making several game-saving stops.

The Wildcats are now 3-3-3 in conference action for the season, in what is shaping up to be battle for the Kensington Valley Conference title.

Triva: When the Wildcats defeated Howell 2-1 on December 1 at Novi, it was also Brett Jaussi scoring the decisive goal.
 

Pinckney Pirates Sink Wildcats 3 - 2
Pinckney starts strong, Novi plays catch-up

The Pinckney Pirates and Novi Wildcats played some solid hockey Monday evening at the Kensington Valley Ice House, and the Pirates went home with a 3-2 victory.

Pinckney Coach Yockey's Pirates started strong, playing a conservative and well-disciplined first period, and scoring two goals against Novi.  Things evened up in the second period, as both teams notched a goal.  Tom Ciaverilla scored for Novi, with an assist from Mark Eberline and R. J. Makoski. 

The Wildcats dominated the third period, with Novi go-to guy Ryan Fox scoring off a Mark Eberline / Mike Arnold pass.  Brad Clos held the Pirates at bay that entire third period, but Novi couldn't get the puck past Pinckney's goalie, who stopped 5 breakaways with seeming ease.

Novi is now 3-3-2 in conference action, and 6-5-2 overall.

Novi comes back from U.P. trip with a solid win

The Wildcats returned from a winning trip to the U.P. Sunday, and continuing that winning tradition with a solid 3-0 defeat of the Milford Mavericks Thursday evening.  Goalie Justin Ruccolo was stellar in net, earning his first shut-out of the season.

The Wildcats started on the board in the first period with a goal from Mark Eberline on a pass from Tom Ciaverilla and R.J. Makoski.  In the second period, Ciaverilla and Brett Jaussi scored, both with an assist from Chris Zarem.  Greg Morisette also earned an assist on the final goal of the evening.  Zarem also dashed the Yooper's hopes last weekend with what the coaches said was the best hockey playing of his high school career.

The Wildcats are now one point out of first place in the Kensington Valley Conference, and have a few days off before hitting the road again next week.  They travel to Pinckney Monday, then Howell Wednesday.
 

Cats Come Through, Beating Houghton 5-3
Final game in the U.P. Tourney goes well for Novi

Following their 2-1 victory over the Calumet Copper Kings, Novi took on the hometown Houghton Gremlins at the historic Dee Stadium Saturday night. The birthplace of professional hockey in America, Dee Stadium was built in 1902 and is still one of the most exciting places to play on in the country.  Novi played what was perhaps their best road game of the season at the Dee, defeating the Gremlins 5-3 in the original hockey town.

With 2:53 left in the first period, Ryan Fox took in a pass from Mark Eberline and scored the first goal of the night. The Cats got another one past the Gremlin's goalie during a power play a minute later, as R.J. Makoski hit a strong slap shot from the blue line to take a respectable 2-0 lead.

Midway through the second period, Houghton was able to sneak one past goalie Brad Clos to put their mark on the scoreboard, 2-1.  As time went by, both teams continued to play aggressively and kept the rest of the period scoreless.

Mark Eberline hit a wrist shot in the upper corner of the net, giving Novi a solid 3-1 lead after only 30 seconds had gone by in the third period. Following another goal by the Gremlins, Mark Eberline once again scored when he chipped in a Tom Ciaverilla pass from the blue line.

Houghton also took advantage of the power play, scoring off a 5 on 3 opportunity with 8:37 left on the clock.  Ciaverilla finished things off with the final goal of the night, and weekend.

Junior first-year Varsity goalie Brad Clos was solid in net on his first Varsity win, and did a great job keeping the Gremlins out of Novi's net.  Mark Eberline had 4 points in the game, and Ciaverilla had 3 to lead the Wildcats to victory.  "Eberline leads by example," said Novi Head Coach Dan Phelps following the game.

Coach Phelps also noted that “the Cats really make things happen when they play together.”  With all but one goal coming on a power play, Phelps added that "special teams made the game."

Novi's defense played a great game all-around, with R.J. Makoski, Zach Flavin  and the rest of the "D" keeping the Gremlins at bay on their home ice.

The Brighton Bulldogs cheered loudly for Novi the entire game, and afterwards young Houghton fans gathered with Novi's team leaders for autographs in the arena's hockey museum room.

In other action, Brighton defeated Calumet 1-0 in a hard fought defensive battle Saturday night. The Wildcats cheered loudly in unison for their KVC rivals throughout the game, easily drowning out the local cheers.

Novi Kicks Off Trip Up North Trip With A Win Over Calumet Kings 2-1
Team Prepares for Houghton on Saturday

The Wildcats were no where close to home Friday, but their team was together for the opening game in the Hockey Showcase in Calumet, Michigan.  Novi defeated the Calumet Copper Kings 2-1 on their historic home ice.

Throughout the first period, both teams played aggressively, and Calumet scored the first goal of the night at the 10:51 mark.  The Wildcats countered two minutes later when Jon Hamblin grabbed an R.J. Makoski pass and flew down the ice, scoring a beauty for Novi’s first goal of the game.

With the score tied at 1 - 1, both teams came out and played a physical game in the second period.  With plenty of rough action, the score remained the same going into the third period.

Things cooled down as time went by, giving both teams a chance to set up and score. Once again the Cats got the break they needed when Mark Eberline punched in a Ryan Fox / Steve Rousseau pass right in front of the net to give Novi a 2-1 lead with 7:27 to go.

That’s the way it stayed till the end, as Novi came out on top with a big win over the well disciplined Calumet Copper Kings.

In net for Novi, Justin Ruccolo made several great saves to ensure Novi's victory.  "He played an outstanding game," noted Goalie Coach Dennis Gagnon.

It was a "huge win for the Cats," stated Head Coach Dan Phelps following the game.  Phelps noted that this trip, as it does every year, "has the guys blending".  The long bus ride and comradery of the 4  day trip, he explained, is great for team building.  The entire trip is financed through fund raising and player funds.

Novi Varsity Hockey will stay in the U.P. for another day, as they face Houghton on Saturday at 1:00pm in Houghton.
 

Wildcats Lose Close One to Eagles, 3-2
Hartland scores with a minute to go to break tie

The Wildcats lost a close one Tuesday evening at the Novi Ice Arena, as the Hartland Eagles scored with 1:17 to go in the game to claim the victory.

After a scrappy and score-less first period, Hartland scored first in the second period on a power play.  Minutes later, Chris Zarem scored for Novi with an assist from Brett Jaussi and Greg Morisette.  It was a 1-1 tie after two periods.

In the third period, Hartland scored first again just 19 seconds into the period.  Hartland held that 2-1 lead for most of the third period until Mark Eberline scored with 2:46 to go.  Steve Rousseau and Tom Ciaverilla assisted.  A minute and a half later, Hartland scored again to make it 3-2, and claim the victory.

The Wildcats are on an extended road trip for the next two weeks.  Thursday they head to Houghton for the annual U.P. Tournament.  Next week, the Cats take on Milford, then Pinckney and Howell the following week - all away games.  The Cats return home to meet Lakeland on Wednesday, January 26th, at the Novi Ice Arena.

Annual game brings 50+

The Novi Ice Arena was full of familiar faces Thursday evening, as former Hockey Wildcats representing every team since the program's inception met on the ice for a friendly game of hockey.  After some minor score board problems, it was decided that the game ended in a tie.

It was the fourth annual alumni game that brought family and friends to the arena to see these former Wildcats in action.  Current Wildcats watched from the stands, and many Novi High School students also attended.  Coach Phelps, the Wildcat's head coach since the program's inception in 1998, noted that the game was played on the sixth anniversary of the Hockey Cats first ever victory.

The current Hockey Wildcats have a big week ahead of them.  They take on the Hartland Eagles at Novi Tuesday at 6:00 p.m., then board a motor coach Thursday morning for a 12 hour ride to Houghton for the annual U.P. tournament.

When Novi and Northville meet at center ice, the arena is always full, the crowd loud, and the action fast and exciting.  Friday evening was no exception.  The Wildcats played what was likely their best game of the season to date, and defeated their Baseline rivals, and friends, the Northville Mustangs, 3-2.

Northville got on the board first with three minutes remaining in the first period on a power-play goal.  Two minutes later, it was Novi scoring on a power-play goal as Tom Ciaverilla put one between the pipes off an assist from Ryan Fox and R.J. Makoski.

In the second period, the action continued fast and furious.  Chris Zarem scored a beauty off a pass from Ciaverilla to make it 2-1 Novi after two.

The third period was back and forth, as both teams tried hard - Novi to seal the game, and Northville to catch up. Then, with exactly one minute to go in the game, the Mustangs managed a lucky shot that got past Justin Ruccolo to tie up the game. 

It looked like this game might end as other Baseline games have ended - a tie.  Mark Eberline decided otherwise when he scored with 10 seconds remaining off another Fox pass, with an additional assist from brother Scott Eberline, to seal Northville's fate.

Final score: 3-2 Novi.

It was a huge win for the Wildcats, who are off until January when they take on the Hartland Eagles on Tuesday, January 4th.  Then, Coach Phelps and crew take the Hockey Cats on the annual 550 mile trip to the frozen north for da U.P. Tournament, January 7th and 8th.

Wildcats Fall to Lions 5 - 4 in Close One
Ryan Fox leads team with 2 goals; Lions break tie

The Wildcats had their hopes for a victory against South Lyon dashed in the last, rough, minute of play Wednesday evening, as the Lions managed to put one between the posts, breaking a tie game for the victory.

Novi's R.J. Makoski started things off in the first period to make it 1-0 after one period of action.  The Lions answered back with two goals in the second period before Ryan Fox and Jon Hamblin scored to pull Novi back ahead.  The Lions managed to get another one in to make it 3-3 after two periods of play.

In the third period, South Lyon moved ahead 4-3 before Fox tied things up yet again.  Near the end of the third period, the Lions got a lucky break and scored short-handed - their final and decisive goal of the evening.  Final score: 5-4 South Lyon.

It was Novi's first conference loss of the season.  Friday, Baseline rival takes on Novi at 6:00 p.m. Novi has home-ice.

The coaches announced this week the three team captains for the 2004 - 2005 season.  This year's captains are seniors Brett Jaussi and Zach Flavin, and junior Ryan Fox.  All three are recognized for the valued contributions and leadership to the Wildcats.

The Brighton Bulldogs found themselves playing catch-up Tuesday evening at the Novi Ice Arena, coming from a 2-0 deficit to tie up the game in the third period, and eventually skating to a 3-3 tie.

After nearly a full period of fast hockey in the first period, Novi started on the board with seconds remaining as Mark Eberline poked one in off a pass from Ryan Fox and Greg Morisette.  Then, after a score-less second period, Brett Jaussi scored with an assist from Morisette and Shamus Finnerty to put the Cats ahead 2-0 early in the third period.

Brighton got on the board with a vengeance, scoring two quick goals just thirty seconds apart, them another, before Eberline scored off another Fox pass to even things up.  Both teams skated with full force to the final second, but Novi's Brad Clos and Brighton's goalie held firm to the end.

The Wildcats remain undefeated in conference action, and 2-2-2 overall after facing some tough non-league competition at the start of the season.  Next week, Novi travels to South Lyon Wednesday, then hosts the Northville Mustangs Friday at the Novi Ice Arena.

Everyone knew it was a big game going into the Novi Ice Arena Wednesday evening, with Novi and Howell facing-off for the first time this season. The Wildcats and Highlanders played the game the fans were expecting. It was fast and exciting -- right to the final second of play. Coach Phelps had the team tuned just right for the game, and the results showed.

After a score-less first period, Howell put one between the pipes 25 seconds into the second. Novi's Ryan Fox, a big Wildcat go-to guy, answered back minutes later on a power play goal off a pass from Steve Rousseau and R.J. Makoski.

Action continued fast and furious, with the net-minders on both ends getting a workout for the evening. Then, at 10:47 of the third period, Brett Jaussi scored a short-handed goal to put Novi ahead 2-1. 

Although Howell made a valiant effort to even things up, Novi's Justin Ruccolo held firm. Ruccolo was stellar in net, making many great saves throughout the game.

Novi is undefeated in conference play this season, and 2-2-1 overall after facing some tough competition early in the season.  Next week, the Brighton Bulldogs come to Novi on Tuesday for a 6:00 p.m. face-off.
 

Wildcats, Pirates Skate to 3-3 Tie
3 unanswered goals take their toll; Hamblin leads team

The Novi Wildcats and the Pinckney Pirates skated to a 3-3 tie Wednesday evening in front of a house packed with alumni and what appeared to be a large portion of Novi's student body.  Novi had many scoring opportunities dashed by the Pirates goalie, who at times seemed to be everywhere at the same time.  Jon Hamblin lead the Wildcats with two goals for the evening.

Hamblin started things off for the Wildcats at 7:27 of the first period off a pass from Shamus Finnerty.  There were only a couple whistles before that first goal, as play continued non-stop and fast.  The Pirates answered back with just over a minute to go in the period to make it 1-1 after one.

In the second period, the Pirates scored on a power play, then scored again ten minutes later to make it a 3-1 hockey game.  But with less that one second on the clock, Hamblin scored again off a Zach Flavin pass to make it 3-2 after two.

Brett Jaussi came out strong in the third period, scoring the tying final goal of the evening with an assist from R.J. Makoski and Tom Ciaverilla.  Both teams fought hard for the last ten minutes, but both goalies held firm.

At the end of the first period, four banners were unveiled to honor the team's past accomplishments.  A line of alumni stretching all the way across the ice stood in honor of the proud moment.  The banners now hang just right of the American flag on the west side of the blue arena.

The Wildcats are off until next Wednesday, when they take on the Howell Highlanders at Novi.  Face-off is 6:00 p.m.

Ceremony to honor team's accomplishments

Novi takes on the Pinckney Pirates this Wednesday evening, and it will be a special game!  The team, joined by State Senator Nancy Cassis, will honor past accomplishments though a banner raising ceremony after the first period.  Many alumni are expected to be present at the game too.

Game time is 6:00 p.m. at the Novi Ice Arena, located off Novi Road on Arena Drive, just south of Ten Mile Road.

As Coach Zarem says, "this is HUGE!"

Livonia Stevenson makes open net shot to seal victory

On Saturday, the Varsity Hockey team lost a close one to Livonia Stevenson 4-2. Leading the Cats were Zach Flavin and Mark Eberline who each scored a goal in the loss. Justin Ruccolo had 22 saves for Novi between the pipes, helping keep them alive in a game that went down to the wire.

Livonia Stevenson finished the game off, scoring an open net goal with under a minute left for the win.

The Wildcats faced off against a tough Farmington Unified team Friday, but were unable to pull out a victory losing 5-1. Brett Jaussi scored the only goal of the night for Novi, with the assist going to Mark Eberline.

On Saturday, Novi goes up against Livonia Stevenson, who lost to Northville 3-1 on Friday.  

Metro Tourney Comes to Novi Tonight
Four top teams to compete in annual contest

The Metro High School Hockey Tourney comes to the Novi Ice Arena this weekend, allowing hockey-depraved fans a chance to some some of the region's top high school hockey talent.

Northville starts things off Friday taking on defending champion Livonia Stevenson.  Novi then takes on Farmington at 8:30 p.m..  The winners of those games meet Saturday at 8:30 p.m.  The consolation game is Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

This is always a great start to the region's high school hockey season.  Don't miss it!
 

Wildcats Down Eagles 8-4
Justin Ruccolo stellar in first game

The Wildcats won their first game of the season, a conference game, Tuesday evening, defeating Lakeland 8-4 at the Eagles nest.  Justin Ruccolo was stellar in net, stopping 25 shots on goal, and senior Brett Jaussi notched three points to lead the team to victory.  The Wildcats showed their depth, with those eight goals coming from eight different Cats.

Novi started off strong in the first period, with goals from Jaussi, Kyle Mouch, Ryan Fox, and Mark Eberline.  An additional goal from Tom Ciaverilla in the second period put the Cats ahead 4-0 before Lakeland started fighting back to end the second period 5-3.  That was as close as the Eagles got to the Wildcats though.

In the third period, Novi recorded three more goals from Shamus Finnerty, Mike Arnold and Chris Zarem to seal the Eagle's fate.

In the first Varsity KVC game of their careers, Mouch, Finnerty and Arnold all scored.  That's quite a start for these newest Cats!  It's still early in the season, and the team has a tough schedule coming up.

Coach Smith noted following the game "We are looking forward to December in which we will have only four games and several practices to develop our skills and systems in-depth."

Coaches Win National Title
Mission Detroit #1 at Nationals

Coaches Phelps, Smith and Zarem and their Team Mission Detroit Masters have won another national roller hockey title.  After taking the NARCH Gold in Cincinnati this summer, the veteran hockey guys traveled to Irvine California to compete in the USA Adult Inline National Championships.

Due to a lack of opponents, Mission moved up in to the top men's division.  But that didn't slow these old hockey pucks (average age 38) down at all.  It was 7 games in 4 days against some of the best (and younger) competition in the USA.  In the final game, Mission defeated the Hyper Slip Jacks in the second over-time period, 5-4.

Team Mission Detroit has been together for ten years.  The coaches now have 27 roller titles, 23 senior ice titles, 2 college titles, and 6 titles as coaches.

Pre-Season League Try-outs This Week

A fall pre-season team to participate in a newly formed fall showcase prep league will be having open tryouts at the Kensington Valley Ice House on the following dates:
  - Wednesday Sept. 8 from 7:45 - 9:15 p.m.
  - Thursday Sept. 9 from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.

A third tryout will take place on Friday September 10 if needed.

All players must wear full hockey equipment, including a neck guard and mouthguard, to participate in the tryouts. The cost for the tryouts is $45.00.

Congratulations are in order to Coaches Dan Phelps, John Smith and Dave Zarem -- three key members of the Over-35 Team Mission Detroit Masters.  The coaches defeated the Tour Bordercats in overtime 2 - 1 last weekend to take home the cup in the North American Roller Hockey Championship at Evendale (Cincinnati) Ohio.

Skills and Conditioning Skates Scheduled
Month of July the time to learn, and get in shape for fall

Powercat Hockey and the Novi Varsity Hockey coaches will be conducting skills and conditioning skates throughout the month of July for any interested players who will be attending Novi High School in the fall.

There will be nine sessions beginning July 1st,2004 and running every Tuesday and Thursday evening through July 29,2004. The skates will be limited in the number of participants for each session.
