Norsemen Defeat Wildcats 4 - 2 in State Semi-Finals
3/8/02
It was the #1 ranked team in the State verses the #2 ranked team in the State, and they came out 1 - 2 in the end.  In the State Semi-Final Game, the Grosse Pointe North Norsemen defeated the Novi Wildcats 4 - 2 at the Flint IMA Arena Thursday evening.  It was a close game to the end, when the Norsemen slipped one into Novi's empty net with seconds to go to seal their victory.  This was Novi's third trip past Regionals -- of a four year program!

Novi's Sophomore Goalie, Dan Morrison, played an excellent game stopping many tough Grosse Pointe shots.  Novi's defense was also solid an kept the Norsemen at bay for much of the game.  While Norsemen's defense concentrated on Novi's top shooters, Novi's underclassmen came through on the scoring.  When the going gets tough, Chaz "the Man" Bulbuk comes through.  He did Thursday as usual to lead the Cats in points for the evening.

Junior Brian Jaussi blasted one into the net on an Adam Haberman / Chaz Bulbuk pass halfway through the 2nd period.  Grosse Pointe added three goals in the second period to take the lead.  In the third, Sophomore Chaz Bulbuk scored a nice one on a Robby Overfield rebound to make it a close game.  But the Norsemen defense held solid, and a open-netter with nine seconds to go sealed their victory.

The Wildcats end the season with an impressive 23-4-2 record, 13-1-0 in the KVC.

Game Trivia
This is the second time the Wildcats and Norsemen have met recently.  On February 23, the Wildcats soundly defeated the Norsemen 6 - 3 on Grosse Pointe's home ice.  This was Novi's second trip to the semi-finals, and third trip past regionals, in three years -- of a four year program.  State records aren't available for that statistic, but if any other team has done that in recent history, we sure don't recall it.

Wildcats Defeat Okemos in Overtime 4-3
3/6/02  Detroit News Coverage
It was Overfield in Overtime Tuesday evening at the Summit Arena in Lansing, as the Wildcats came from behind to defeat the Okemos Chieftains in the State Quarter-Final Game on Okemos' home ice.  Before a standing room only crowd, the Cats put on quite a show the last few minutes of regulation, and into overtime, dominating the Chieftains.

Novi started off the game on a Robert Vulaj goal at the 13:54 mark of the first period -- just over a minute into the game.  Okemos responded three minutes later on a power- play goal.  Okemos started off the 2nd period with another power-play goal, before Wildcat John Murray tied things up with a beauty on a Wildcat power-play.  Okemos scored again with a minute to go in the period, making it a 3 - 2 Okemos hockey game after two.

The Wildcats came out strong in the 3rd period, and were all over the Chieftain net.  Robby Overfield scored the second tying goal of the evening with just 2:05 left to play on an Adam Haberman pass to make it 3 - 3.  That sent the game into overtime.  Less than two minutes into overtime play, Overfield took a pass from Chaz Bulbuk, came around behind the net and quickly popped one into the uncovered corner to give the Wildcats the victory.

Dan Morrison had 14 saves for the Wildcats and was solid in net.  The Cats take on the Grosse Pointe North Norsemen Thursday at 8:30pm at the Flint IMA Arena.

Wildcat Game Trivia
Two years ago, the Novi Wildcats and the Okemos Chieftains also met for the State Quarter-Final game.  In that nail-biter, the Chieftains scored the winning goal in overtime.  Did that referee Tuesday evening look familiar?  He should.  O'Donnell was also the referee of that game two years ago, and he called the winning goal for Okemos on a net scramble in overtime.

Spotlight Player of the Week: Garet Malott
Junior Garet Malott is a guy on the team who comes through when the pressure is on.  He played some excellent hockey the last two games of Regionals, and notched a point in the Wildcat's victory over the Northville Mustangs Wednesday.  We know that Garet believes he can do just about anything.  He can.  Garet is also the grandson of former Detroit Red Wings Great, and Hockey Hall of Famer, Bill Gadsby.

Wildcats Win Regionals, Shut-out Livonia 4 - 0
3/2/02
The Wildcats defeated the Livonia Franklin Patriots 4 - 0 Friday evening at the Novi Ice Arena to win Regionals for the third straight year -- of a four year program!  The Patriots played a good, clean hockey game in what has developed into a solid, friendly and clean hockey rivalry.

Dan Morrison played a great game in net, and kept the Patriots at bay the entire game with several great saves.  Brian Jaussi lead the way for the Wildcats with two goals and three points.  Adam Haberman and Chaz Bulbuk each added two points.  Bryan Ellis, Justin Collins, and Ryan Shoenbach also put in solid performances on the blue line.

Sophomore Chaz "the Man" Bulbuk played a great game, and started off the Cats with a goal at 11:09 of the first period.  It was a nice shot, front-and-center, from a Jordan Collins / Brian Jaussi pass.  Both teams then skated score-less through the second period.

In the third period, Brian Jaussi was on a mission when he scored two goals three minutes apart, with assists to Adam Haberman, and then to Bulbuk and Haberman, to secure the Wildcat's victory.  Senior Robby Overfield, in his final career performance on home ice, managed to score, unassisted, while sitting down in front of the net at the 3:04 mark of the third period.  That would also be the Cat's final goal for the season at home.

The Wildcats head west to the Summit Arena in Lansing to take on Okemos Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. for the State Quarterfinal Game -- their third trip in three years.  Not too shabby for a four year program, folks!

Wildcat Game Trivia
Livonia Franklin has not scored a goal against the Wildcats in 7 periods of hockey -- their last goal was 2/19/01 in the 2nd period.  Livonia Franklin is also Coach Phelps' old team. He was an assistant coach there and is a Franklin Alumni.  Coach Zarem also attended school at Livonia Franklin -- a few years before Coach Phelps!

Wildcats Defeat Northville in Round 2 of Regionals
2/27/02
The Novi Wildcats defeated the Baseline rival Northville Mustangs 7 - 3 Wednesday evening to win Game #2 of Regionals at the Novi Ice Arena.  It started out as a fast shoot-out, and continued as a fast game throughout.  Both teams played some excellent hockey.

Northville started things off quickly, scoring just 11 seconds into the game.  And quickly the game went, with Novi scoring two in a row shortly after.  Robby Overfield started things off on a Garet Malott pass.  Robert Vulaj scored three minutes later with assists to Jordan Collins and Robbie Harrell.  That made it 2 - 2 after one period.

In the 2nd, the Wildcats dominated on goals from John Murray, Robbie Harrell, Robby Overfield and Brian Jaussi.  Northville was skating short-handed for two of those goals.  Novi had the lead 6 - 2.  In the 3rd, Northville scored with 4:30 to go.  Adam Haberman put one in with 1:05 to go to, while Novi was skating short-handed, to make it 7 - 3 Novi in the end.

Robby Overfield lead the Cats with 4 points.  Dan Morrison handled the net and was solid.  The Wildcats meet Livonia Franklin Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Novi Ice Arena for Game #3.  Livonia Franklin defeated Waterford Kettering 2 - 1 in overtime before the Novi - Northville game.

Wildcats Defeat Ypsi Lincoln 10 - 0 in Playoff Opener
2/25/02
The Wildcat's offensive machine was clicking Monday evening in the first round of Regionals, as the Cats shut down Ypsilanti Lincoln 10 - 0.  The game was called at 5:04 of the 3rd period due to the 10 Point Rule.  Trent Sisson earned a shut-out with a solid performance in net, and earned one point for an assist during the game.

Robbie Harrell started the Cats on the Board on a John Murray pass, quickly followed by Adam Haberman on a Brian Jaussi rebound.  In the 2nd, the Wildcats earned goals from Robby Overfield, Haberman, Robert Vulaj and John Murray.  In the 3rd, four more goals from Chaz Bulbuk, John Janssens, Bulbuk again, and Mario DeGrazia.  Robbie Harrell's final goal at 5:04 of the 3rd period put the Wildcats ahead by 10 points and stopped the game.

Also, in playoff action at Novi, Northville defeated Lakeland 8 - 4, Waterford Kettering over Saline 2 - 0, and Livonia Franklin over the South Lyon Lions 12 - 2.  Novi takes on Northville at Novi Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.  Before that, at 5:30 p.m., Livonia Franklin and Waterford Kettering will meet.  The finals game is then Friday at 7:00 p.m., also at the Novi Ice Arena.

Wildcats Defeat #1 Ranked Grosse Pointe North 6-3
2/24/02
The #2 ranked Novi Wildcats put on a solid performance Saturday evening to defeat the #1 ranked Grosse Pointe North Norsemen 6-3 in a rough game at the Mt. Clemens Ice Arena.  The Wildcats out-shot the Norsemen 27 - 20, and played some excellent hockey with solid passing and good defensive work.  Grosse Pointe pulled 14 penalties and their Asst. Coach received a game misconduct.

Robby Overfield lead the way for the Wildcats with a hat-trick and an assist.  Several other Wildcats had a big point night including Adam Haberman (4), Justin Collins (3), Jordan Collins (3), and Robert Vulaj (2).  Fred Napier, John Murray, Jared Perras, Chaz Bulbuk, and Brian Jaussi were all over the Norsemen and kept them at bay.

Grosse Pointe got on the board first with a goal at 7:33 of the 1st period.  Chaz Bulbuk answered back to start the Cats off with the first goal at 2:05 on a Vulaj pass, and the Norsemen never regained the lead.  Robbie Harrell scored the second Wildcat goal a minute later to make it 2 - 1 Novi after one period.

In the 2nd, Robby Overfield scored at 12:29 on a Adam Haberman / Jordan Collins pass.  Grosse Pointe scored two goals to tie things up briefly, but Adam Haberman put in the game winning goal three minutes later with assists to Overfield and Justin Collins.  The 3rd period was all Novi's, as Overfield ensured the victory with two goals and the Norsemen scrambled to catch up.

Trent Sisson and Dan Morrison split the net duty, and both played an excellent game against a very solid offensive team.  Grosse Pointe was held to one goal in the first period, and two in the second.

Wildcats Named to All-League Team
2/23/02
Wildcats Justin Collins, Jordan Collins and Robby Overfield were selected for the First Team All-League Team.  Second Team Wildcats include Dan Morrison and Adam Haberman.  Honorable mentions to Robbie Harrell and Jared Perras.  Congratulations, Top Cats!

Wildcats Down Highlanders 8 - 4, Win KVC
2/20/02
The Novi Wildcats won the Kensington Valley Conference Title for the third straight year with a solid 8 - 4 victory over KVC rival Howell.  It was an exciting, back-and-forth game for the first two periods, as Howell scored, then Novi, changing directions eight times in the first two periods!  But it was the Wildcat's game in the third period after Senior Robby Overfield set the tone by scoring the tying goal.  He lead the way with 4 points.  Defenseman Justin Collins was solid in the zone and added another 3 points.  Senior Adam Haberman notched a hat-trick in his final regular season home game of his high school career, and scored the Wildcat's first goal, the second tying goal, and the game winning goal!

Howell started on the board at 13:27 of the first period.  Two minutes later, Haberman skated past the front of the net and his unassisted back-hander found an uncovered corner to even things up.  Howell scored again late in the 1st period to lead the game 2 - 1 after one period of play.

Novi started on the board in the 2nd period on an Adam Haberman bullet.  Howell scored 18 seconds later.  Then, while the game announcer was still trying to read Novi's first goal of the period, Novi scored again just 14 seconds later.  That was a beauty from Robert "Flash" Vulaj.  Yep, that's three goals in 32 seconds of action!  Howell put one in at 8:33 to make it 4 - 3 Howell after two.

Robby Overfield took over two minutes into the 3rd period, scoring on a nice pass from John Murray to tie things up.  29 seconds later, Haberman scored on a Justin Collins pass to put the Wildcats ahead for the first time in the game.  They didn't look back from there.  Brian Jaussi scored two minutes later on a Ryan Schoenbach pass.  Overfield scored two minutes after that, unassisted.  Senior Fred Napier put in Novi's final goal on a Garet Malott pass to seal the victory.

Novi's defense was strong as usual, and Dan Morrison was solid in net and had several nice saves including two glove catches that were so fast they were hard to see.

The #2 ranked Wildcats head east to take on #1 ranked Grosse Pointe North Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Mt. Clemens before returning to the Novi Ice Arena for Monday's first regional playoff game.

Regional Schedule

Wildcats Sink Pirates 6 - 4
2/13/02
Wednesday was Senior Recognition Night as the Wildcats sunk the Pinckney Pirates 6 - 4 at Novi Ice Arena, with the first four goals all coming from seniors.  Senior Steve Stork manned the Cat net, and did a great job keeping the Pirates at bay for most of the game as did senior Ryan Shoenbach on defense -- the Wildcat's venerable blue line man.  Justin Collins lead the Wildcats with 3 points, followed by brother Jordan and senior Robby Overfield, each with 2 points.

Robby Overfield started off the Wildcats with a goal near the end of the 1st period on assists from Justin Collins and Bryan Ellis.  Adam Haberman put in another on a Garet Malott pass, short-handed, a minute later.  It was a very nice play.  Overfield then added one with assists to Chaz Bulbuk and Jordan Collins to make it 3 - 0 Novi after one period.

The 2nd period was also score-less, as senior Fred Napier controlled the puck for much of the period and kept the Pirates chasing it.  With 1:56 left on the clock, Robbie Harrell put one in on a Justin Collins pass.  Pinckney snuck one by a minute later to make it 4 - 1 Novi after two periods of play.

Wildcat Brian Jaussi was on a mission when he scored unassisted at the beginning of the 3rd period.  The game was again score-less until Pinckney got one with 5:55 to go while Novi had two men in the penalty box.  Pinckney scored again at 3:27.  A minute later, Jared Perras was all over the Pirates and scored on a pass from brothers Justin and Jordan Collins.  Perras had been out injured for a couple games, and looked ready for action!

Father of two players, Mr. Roger Jaussi did a great job as Master of Ceremonies for the Senior Recognition Program.  He introduced each senior player along with their parents and had something to say about each.

Wildcats Spotlight Player of the Week: Brett Jaussi

Novi's very own Happy Gilmore, and more...
2/9/02
Brett Jaussi
is the only Freshman on the team this year, and he is already making solid contributions.  Brett had 4 points in the Wildcats victory over Milford last Wednesday.  His skating has improved tremendously during the season, and he handles the puck well.  Brett is also an accomplished golfer, having also made the Wildcat Golf Team in his first year at Novi High School.  Yep, he's the team's Happy Gilmore, only this guy can also play hockey!

Wildcats Trounce Redskins 11 - 1
2/6/02
Novi scored 7 goals in one period to defeat the Milford Redskins 11 - 1 at the Lakeland Arena Wednesday evening.  The game was stopped in at 13:10 of the 3rd period due to the new 10 point rule.  Robbie Overfield lead the Cats with 5 points, Robert Vulaj and Brett Jaussi had 4, and Adam Haberman and Jordan Collins each had 3.  Dan Morrison covered the Wildcat net, and that combined with some solid defensive work held the Redskins down to just one goal.

John Murray started the Wildcats on the board with a nice goal in the 1st period on a pass from Vulaj and Robbie Harrell.  Chaz Bulbuk and Harrell then scored to make it 3 - 0 Novi after one period of play.  In the 2nd period, the Cats were all over the Milford net with two goals coming from Haberman, two more from Overfield, and additional goals from Brett Jaussi, Vulaj and Garet Malott.  Fred Napier scored a goal at 13:10 of the 3rd period to make it 11 - 1 Novi, and that also stopped the game as the Cats moved ahead by 10 points -- a new rule this year.

Spotlight Player of the Week: Robert Vulaj

Robert Vulaj
, the "Phoenix Flash," is new to the team and new to Novi.  Robert is a good skater with a good eye for passing and putting the puck in the net.  He scored a goal in each of Novi's last two games -- victories over Hartland and Northville.  Now we know they do know how to play hockey in Arizona!  Although we hear he learned the game in Michigan!  And remember, you can't stop the Flash!

Team Trivia
2/1/02
Did you remember that Novi played Hartland last year on January 31 at Novi, and also won by a score of 7 -1?  How about that Harrell and Haberman were also big scorers in that game too?

Wildcats Down Hartland Eagles 7 - 1
1/30/02
At the Novi Ice Arena, the Cats were clicking Wednesday evening with four goals in one period to down the Hartland Eagles 7 - 1.  Jordan Collins lead the way with three points and some solid defensive work, and Chaz Bulbuk who had two goals.  Wildcat goalie Trent Sission made several great saves to keep the Eagles down to one goal.

Novi started on the board in the 1st period on a goal by Robbie Harrell from a Jordan Collins pass.  Hartland started off the 2nd period with a goal.  The Wildcats came back with two quick ones 43 seconds apart from Adam Haberman and Chaz Bulbuk.  Robby Overfield and Robert Vulaj scored two more goals two minutes apart to close the 2nd period with the score 5 - 1 Novi.  In the 3rd, Novi sealed the game on goals from Bulbuk and Bryan Ellis.

Spotlight Players: Bryan Ellis and Ray Kennedy
1/28/02

This week we spotlight two defensemen who have played some excellent hockey lately.  Bryan Ellis and Ray Kennedy both give 100% in every game, defending the Wildcat net and keeping opponents at bay.  Bryan defended Novi's zone while notching three points in Friday's victory over Northville, while teammate Ray kept the Mustangs at bay with some solid defensive work.  Both guys are new to the team this year, have caught on to Coach Phelps' game quickly, and are making solid contributions to the team.  These guys are part of the Wildcat "Total Team," and as 1980 Olympic Hockey Captain Mike Eruzione says, "It's the role players who win games."  (LISTEN TO MIKE'S ADVICE)

Wildcats Over Mustangs 6 - 3
1/25/02
The Wildcats defeated the Baseline rival Northville Mustangs 6 - 3 in front of a packed house at the Novi Ice Arena Friday evening in a fast and hard-hitting game.  Bryan Ellis played a great game, notching three points to lead the Wildcats while doing a great job protecting the Cat's zone.

Novi got on the board first with 3:22 to go in the 1st on a goal from Adam Haberman, with assists to Brian Jaussi and Bryan Ellis.  Northville answered back with two goals before the period ended to make it 2 - 1 Northville.  At the beginning of the 2nd, Northville scored again -- their final goal.  A rain of glass then slowed things down around Novi's net as a Northville slap-shot hit an overhead light.  The Wildcats scored a minute after play resumed on a goal from Robby Overfield with assists Justin Collins and Chaz Bulbuk.  That made it 3 - 2 Northville after two periods of play.

Three minutes into the 3rd period a goal from Robert Vulaj on a pass from John Murray and Ellis set the Cats in motion.  Another wild Northville shot bounced off a steel roof girder and hit another overhead light in the Wildcat zone, but this one didn't break.  With six minutes to go, Overfield scored a beauty on an unbelievable pass through two Northville defenders by Robbie Harrell.  A minute later, Harrell scored on a pass from Vulaj.  Northville pulled Dave Stewart from net -- he played an excellent game -- and Haberman found that open net with some help from Ellis.

The Wildcats were supported by solid defense throughout the game.  Ray Kennedy and Justin Collins were especially strong on the blue line.  Dan Morrison handled the rain of glass and Novi's net, and made several outstanding saves for the Wildcats.

Wildcats Ice Lions 10 - 2
1/23/02
Wildcat Captain Jared Perras had a 5-point game to lead the team to a 10 - 2 victory over the South Lyon Lions Wednesday evening.  Also leading the Wildcats on to victory were four guys with a 4-point game: John Murray, Robbie Harrell, Robby Overfield, and Adam Haberman; Justin Collins with a 3 point game, and Brian Jaussi with 2.  It was a fast, smooth game with only two Wildcat penalties.

South Lyon got on the board 1st, but the Wildcats answered back quickly and often with 2 goals in the first period from Murray and Harrell.  The Cats dominated the 2nd period with 4 goals.  In the 3rd, South Lyon got one, but the Wildcats added 4 more.  Trent Sission and Steve Stork shared the net, each giving up only one goal and both looking very solid on 17 shots.

Spotlight Player of the Week: Chaz Bulbuk

Sophomore Chaz "the Man" Bulbuk is big, he's fast, and he knows how to score a goal.  Three goals, in two games, at the Calumet Invitational last weekend.  Not too shabby.  Chaz is the guy you count on when the going is rough, and he comes through when you need him.

Wildcats Highlighted in New Sports Column

1/16/02
The Novi Wildcats had a big win Wednesday evening, catching the Brighton Bulldogs 2 - 1 in one of the fastest and most exciting games of the season.  The Bulldogs started on the board first, scoring with 31 seconds remaining in a very fast 1st period.  In the 2nd, the Wildcats came out looking to even the score.  Adam Haberman did that a couple minutes into the period on a power-play goal with assists to Jared Perras and Robbie Harrell.  Both teams skated very well, and after another period of fast hockey, the Wildcats scored at 5:52 of the 3rd period.  Robby Overfield put that one in the net on an assist from Haberman and Jordan Collins.  Dan Morrison played a great game in net, stopping several tough shots.
