October 30, 2011 Student athletes tend to have a lot on their minds. Be it the pressure of excelling in school, participating in extracurricular activities, or simply performing to the best of their ability in their athletic field. It’s more than obvious that balancing all of these factors and staying focused can be difficult at times. Not many individuals are capable of such an act. The Novi Wildcats Varsity Volleyball team did an excellent job at proving they are capable of creating their own balance by not only competing on the day of their homecoming, which can be quite hectic, but also by staying focused and winning the KLAA association tournament for their 2nd consecutive year. The ‘Cats were able to pull out the astonishing win with the use of balance, and adapting to the situation that they were placed in. One of the most impressive aspects of this team is their ability to adapt to any and all situations thrown their way. The recent injury of a key player forced the creation of a few alterations in the varsity line-up. Senior Lesley Harrington stepped up in the tournament by filling in for her injured teammate and playing a position she does not specialize in. The ‘Cats had faith in Harrington’s abilities, and truly came together in motivating her to fulfill the position of outside hitter. It’s not often that one comes by a team consisting of talented athletes that are capable of making those crucial and necessary adaptations. Most teams have that one “go-to-guy” who consistently leads the team to victory. Though, when that player falls, there is noone to step up and the team crumbles. That is not the case for the Novi Wildcats Varsity Volleyball team. This is a team filled with well-rounded athletes who mesh well together and build each other up even when the odds are against them. Through their adaptations, they have effectively created the balance needed to succeed and excel in the sport of volleyball. This has been made apparent with their impressive record of 40-5-1. The ‘Cats next adaptation has yet to be settled on. The winner between Plymouth and Northville will determine who the ‘Cats play next and how they need to adapt in order to prevail against their opponent. (c) 2011 Novi
