Novi Girls Soccer: An effort to be recognized
June 12, 2011

The school year is winding down to it's final days and the spring sports season is ending along with it. One of my personal favorite Novi sports teams still competing is the Girls Varsity Soccer team.

Week after week they dominate their opponent and leave us all wondering how they're able to keep it up. Last Friday the Novi girls varsity soccer team took on Utica Eisenhower high school in the Regional finals and continued to prove their worthiness of the title "defending State Champs."

Near the end of the first half, the 'Cats put one in their opponent's net with the combined effort of Senior Nicki Caruso and Sophomore Erin Dircks, making it 1-0 at half time. Eisenhower's attempt at responding to the 'Cats goal failed with a blocked shot from Senior goalie, Gabby Gauruder.

With approximately eleven minutes left in the game Caruso forced another ball into Eisenhower's net, furthering the distance between the two teams and making the score 2-0.

Though they were up by two and it was unlikely for Eisenhower to come back, the 'Cats refused to let up. Continuing to play aggressively, the 'Cats prevented their opponent from scoring and recorded another shut out.

It's efforts like this that should be recognized. By furthering their season deeper into the playoffs, I think they will be.

The 'Cats next game is for the MHSAA semi final title. The game is against Grosse Pointe South, Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
