April 10, 2011 I heard a handfull of rumors about long, dreadful, and agonizing workouts for the distance crew on the Novi Men's Track Team over Spring Break. After hearing these rumors I was intrigued and decided to look into it for a possible story. Once I spoke with one of the members of the distance crew I realized all of these rumors I've been hearing were true. Zach Masserant, a junior on the distance crew who's been competing at the varsity level since his freshmen year, allowed me to ask him a few questions about the workouts. I wanted to know exactly what his coach had him and his teammates doing. Masserant explained one specific workout to me that he believed to be the most difficult. It's called "The Perfect." It consists of a non-stop compilation of sprints that ends up being a total of five grueling miles. Masserant told me that their real "break" was the time given to jog between each sprint. After hearing this I thought to myself why is the difficulty level being stepped up so much over break when we should all be relaxing? Masserant informed me that he believes his coach has a goal of pushing the distance crew to be in a position ahead of the competition so when everyone comes back they won't have to waste time catching up. I think that after hearing everything this group has done, Masserant's coach reached his goal and the distance crew will be far ahead of the competition. The Track Team's first meet is away this Tuesday against their all time Baseline rival, the Northville Mustangs. The meet is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. there. (c) 2011 Novi
