January 23, 2011 Just last week the Novi Wildcats Varsity Hockey team traveled to the U.P. - specifically to Houghton, also known as the birthplace of professional hockey. After speaking with Dylan Shepard, a junior on the team, I learned a lot about their trip. Shepard explained to me that in Houghton, hockey isn’t just a sport; it’s a way of life. He described the vast amount of memorabilia and painted a picture in my mind. He also told me about the records of all the hockey games that took place there dating all the way back to the early 1900’s, and explained that being in the presence of something so great was truly inspiring to him and the rest of the team. While in Houghton, one of the ‘Cats biggest accomplishments was taking down Calumet. Calumet is a U.P. team which means that hockey, to them, is much more than just a sport. The ‘Cats went into this game knowing that Calumet was ranked one spot ahead of them in the state standards holding onto the title of being 8th best in the state. The ‘Cats brought down Calumet with a final score of 7-4. Another significant point of the trip was when they got the opportunity to play Marquette. The guys were really excited when they heard they were going to be playing a team they’ve never gone up against before. After a long, penalty-filled battle on the ice, the team that came off as victors was Marquette with a final score of 3-2. I heard about the severe temperature in the arena in Houghton, and asked Shepard about that. He explained that it was “just as cold as playing outside“ and that “It was so cold, some of us had trouble breathing.” Shepard also told me that in the end, he was very proud of their performance and that “being four year winners in the U.P. really shows how far the program has come.” Good job ‘Cats. Keep up the good work. (c) 2011 Novi
