November 28, 2010 Last Wednesday just before Thanksgiving break, the Novi Wildcats Varsity Hockey team skated onto their ice and went up against the Salem Rocks. The 'Cats previous two games against Rochester and Clarkston were shut-outs in Novi's favor, so they went into this game feeling “confident and prepared,” according to Dylan Shepard, a junior on Novi’s squad. With 14 returning players on Salem’s team, the 'Cats knew they would have to really give it all to pull out a win. Salem gave Novi fans a scare by scoring first, but the 'Cats kept their composure and moved on, putting three into the Rock’s net to make the score 3-1. Soon after that the Rocks retaliated, found an opening and added another point onto the score board. But with precise passing the 'Cats sunk another into the back of the Rock’s net and had a comfortable lead of 4-2. Feeling safe with their lead and the fact that there were only five minutes left on the clock, the 'Cats appeared to lose focus. The Rocks managed to score 3 goals in this brief amount of time, making the score 5-4 and giving the Wildcats their first loss of the season. After the disappointing loss, Shepard stated, “Having a two goal lead in hockey is never good. You always start letting up and that’s exactly what we did.” (c) 2010 Novi
