April 4, 2010 In the world of sports and especially in baseball, you never say goodbye, you simply say ‘so long’ because it’s just a matter of time before your paths cross again… This was never so true in my life on January 19th, when I got an opportunity I could not pass up, but it meant that we’d have to relocate to Las Vegas, fast. However, there is an absolute direct link from my athletic career, to contacts I’d developed, that led me to this destination and its lineage spanned 20+ years! And that is another of the 475,000 reasons why sports are such an integral part of our society… they keep us connected in spite of time, space, and distance. I’ve been living in Las Vegas since Feb. 10th, but everyday I log on to Novi.org; in fact I look forward to it. It does my heart good to see Clay Pearson use a sports analogy to describe the business state-of-affairs in Novi, or to see Chief Molloy’s Novi PD win yet another award. And when I read that Caleb Dean reached his dream of getting a Division I basketball offer at Western Michigan University, it validated everything I stand for and believe in. Of course it was always a treat to correspond with likes of Curt Ellis, Tab Kellepourey, Dan Phelps, Dave Zarem, John Smith and Rick Green, as these men have clearly devoted their lives in helping young men and women learn the critical life skills that sports can teach. Also, I can’t forget the great Moe Leon… Sure the food was always terrific, but within 5-seconds of walking into his wonderful establishment, we were knee-deep in sports talk every time! And, never forget the great contribution of David Legg and WOVI 89.5FM, where we proudly hosted “Wildcat Faceoff,” Novi’s own sports talk show from 2000-2004, or George Kortlandt, who always had a kind word and a keen eye for the local sports tapestry. The famous Willy Wonka once said, “We are the makers of music, and the dreamers of dreams.” And, every day in the grand City of Novi, someone’s dream can come true, as in our sports-crazed municipality that arena has proven to be a great training ground. Moreover, we all owe a great debt of gratitude to Scott Olson, the creator and editor of Novi.org. Thanks to Scott’s vision and dedication, this unique website is visited by nearly all 50 states as well approximately 26 countries on a daily basis. Scott’s design foundation has kept us connected, and continues to do so in amazing ways. And you can bet that there will be multiple daily visits from right here in Las Vegas. I am humbled and appreciative to all the people that reached out to me over the years, commenting on this column. But, this will not be my final editorial. A couple of times throughout the year I’ll check in with my musings. So, for now, I simply say ‘so long,’ and to the good folks of Novi, keep making music…on and off the field. Editor's Note: Thanks Bernie, always great to hear from you and best wishes in Vegas! Alex will be back right here next week. (c) 2010 Novi
