February 7, 2010 After 8 years, 421 columns, and countless memories, I have decided to voluntarily step aside. I will of course, swoop down for the occasional guest column, however… It’s been a blast and it’s been a labor of love. And the world has changed a lot since this column debuted. The U.S. was not in Iraq, George Bush was just getting into his first term, and it was well before the Tigers had lost 119 games in a single season, before getting to the World Series just 3-years later. A Novi student that was a senior then would be in their late-twenties now, and a freshman would currently be in their fourth year of college. Meanwhile, the Lions, well, some things never change… Including the world of sports…Somebody named Barry Mano once said, “Sports is life with the volume turned up.” If there has been a recurring theme of this column, it’s that sports really do teach life lessons that can be applied for the rest of our days. There is a direct correlation to the good habits that are learned off the field, resonate on the field, in your work, your community, and your family life. Disciplines, fundamentals, giving your best even though there are no guarantees, and dealing with setback, rejection and temporary defeat, are just some of the basic tenets. The world may have changed a lot in the last several years, but one thing has not changed. Sports are an integral part of our society. They can entertain you, excite you, break your heart, or make your dreams come true. But, they will also make you think. And in the cool light of dawn, when you’re alone in your thoughts, they become a teacher if you’re willing to pay attention. Some things never change, and for that I am grateful. Keep the faith… (c) 2010 Novi
