Never say Never

January 23, 2010

Last year we told you about the ’95-’96 Team Michigan Soccer Club, featuring Novi residents Kendall Kramer and Megan Buckingham, as they captured the 3 v 3 World Championship at the prestigious Disney Complex in Orlando.

They returned this year, knowing that no club had ever repeated that feat… Until now…

After opening play with wins over PDA and the FC Bucks, two clubs that featured an array of regionally ranked players, they faced off against Team Alabama in the quarterfinals, besting them 9-1.

Team Michigan was off and running. In the semi-finals they dominated Carmel 6-2 and it would be onto the Championship game against the highly ranked Central Florida Futbol Freaks. As Yogi Berra would say, “It was déjà-vu all over again,” as this would be a rematch of last years finalists.

The Freaks' coach had been pointing to this game all year, and admitted that he had trained his squad specifically for a potential rematch against Team Michigan. And, after selecting his final roster from a pool of 105 hopefuls, they would once again prove formidable.

The Freaks opened up a 3-0 lead, and even held a 3-1 lead at the half. But, never underestimate the heart of a champion. This team had been in crunch time before. In an earlier game against the Bucks, Team Michigan had to rally in the last 5-minutes to secure a 5-4 victory as Kendall Kramer broke a tie late in the game, weaving through multiple defenders to score a clutch game-winning goal. One minute later, Jordan Newman sealed the deal with a nice insurance goal.

So, when the 2nd half began, Coach Andy Blasco’s Team Michigan came out of the gate like their pants were on fire and it was raining gasoline! Six straight goals later, and Team Michigan, once again, defeated the Central Florida Futbol Freaks 7-6, for their 2nd straight, and unprecedented World 3 v 3 Championship.

The Team Michigan roster includes:

Kendall Kramer, Novi - Michigan Rush '96 Girls Blue

Megan Buckingham, Novi - Michigan Rush 95' Girls Blue

Jordan Newman, Swartz Creek - Michigan Rush Girls '96 Blue

Rubina Veerakone, Caledonia - Grand Rapids Girls '96 Crew

Taylor Sancegraw Farmington, MO - '96 St. Louis Soccer Club Girls

Balanced scoring, teamwork and grit got it done start to finish, as evidenced by the fact that all 5 girls scored in the 5-4 Bucks (NJPA) game. That set the tone for the rest of tournament, as these young ladies proved that you can never really say ‘never.’
