One Step Beyond

January 10, 2010

Greetings from California... While watching the NY Jet-Cincinnati Bengal playoff game Saturday, I had particular interest because both QB's (Carson Palmer and Mark Sanchez) attended High School just five miles apart, and less than five miles from where I sit as I write this column. Hold that thought.

The famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright was once asked what was his favorite design? "My next one," he replied.

Great achievers and great athletes understand the principle of stretching and constantly pressing forward, never being satisfied with simply resting on past successes. These folks are simply unwilling to live below their potential.

And, there are plenty of people, all ages and all backgrounds that possess many gifts and talents, but they've gotten comfortable, and have settled into a complacency.

Palmer is a few years older than Sanchez, who was actually a waterboy when he first met Carson Palmer. Both went to HS football powerhouses, then both attended USC, where Palmer won the Heisman Trophy and Sanchez became the NY Jet starting QB from his first game as a rookie.

Both have overcome injuries, doubters, and neither one got to play right away at USC, they had to wait their turn, and they could've given up like a lot of people do.

But they kept dreaming, hoping and working, and look at them now. I have written about both of these young men, years ago, while each was in High School, believing and projecting that they would be special. I felt the same about Novi's Mitch Maier.

It's fun to see greatness before it truly blossoms. This year I've got my eye on Nick Montana, a senior QB at Oaks Christian HS here in Southern California. Next year, he'll attend the University of Washington, and I predict that in four years, I'll be writing about his debut in the NFL.

Montana has his doubters too, but I am not one of them.

All of these young men share one thing in common. They didn't let anyone else determine their futures for them, regardless of rejection or negative feedback.

They were determined to take their dreams one step beyond. The nice thing about this concept, is that you can do it too...

What is your favorite accomplishment? Make it be your next one...
