December 15, 2009 It all started right here in Michigan at Grand Valley State University. Coach Brian Kelly won the National Championship and took his act to Central Michigan where he continued the excellence, including recruiting and developing All-American QB Dan LeFevour. His erstwhile Cincinnati Bearcats are undefeated and will face the defending champion Florida Gators and Tim Tebow in the Sugar Bowl. Of course, Kelly won’t be there because he just accepted an offer to become the head football coach at the University of Notre Dame. Growing up in Boston in a heavy Irish/Catholic environment family and football, particularly Notre Dame football, were top priorities. What a dream it would be to be a part of the Golden Dome, the Fighting Irish. It wouldn’t be as a player, even though Brian Kelly played college football at Assumption University. But this is America, and every day dreams come true, especially in the world of sports. So, 25-years ago, Kelly began his odyssey as a linebacker coach, (and softball coach) at his alma mater and he started to work very hard, and dream… It was a long haul… 13-years at Grand Valley State, and he started as a graduate assistant with absolutely no guarantees. Next fall he’ll run out of the same tunnel as other legendary coaches like Knute Rockne, Ara Parseghian and Lou Holtz. And make no mistake, Kelly will not fail. Unlike his predecessor Charlie Weis, who thought he could get by on guile and clever offensive schemes, Kelly is a players coach. A coach that knows how to get the most out of players, and a coach that gets players to do their best because they want to, not because they have to. Notre Dame will win a National Championship in the near future thanks to Brian Kelly. As I’ve said, everyday in the world of sport, somebody’s dream comes true, Today, it is Brian Kelly’s turn. In 2010, it might be yours… (c) 2009 Novi
