December 6, 2009 Whenever I speak at a function, I always talk about Rick Boggs. Rick was a music student at UCLA, and a big sports fan. Very accomplished, too... He ran 10k races, climbed Mt. San Jacinto, played tennis, and even pitched an inning of shutout ball for his little league team when he was 12-years old. I don’t believe in athletes as role models, but I proudly called Rick Boggs a role model. Oh, I did forget to mention however that Rick had been blind since he was 5-years old, but he loved to hold a ball and glove in his arms while sleeping at night. At the end of this column, please click on the link and paste it to your web browser, and be prepared to be mesmerized by this 8-minute video. I now have two role models. Say hello to Jake Olson, a brave articulate young man, a center on his flag-football team, and now a big part of the USC football family. Rather than preview the story, I’ll let you watch it…But I will say why I consider him a role model. It’s the exact opposite rationale, that I would use in declaring that great athletes like Shaquille O’Neal or Tiger Woods could never be role models. In the poker game of life, those men were dealt aces. And, yes they’ve had incredible success. But how can I be motivated by multi-millionaires that were given every break they needed as they worked toward their goals? On the other hand, I draw strength from Rick Boggs, and now Jake Olson. These young men were dealt losing hands in the poker game of life, but they’ve parlayed them into huge winners and along the way they’ve touched other people’s lives in ways only they can see… Even if, their sight has been lost forever. They teach us more than ever, that it’s not what happens but how you react. And that’s something a multi-millionaire that struggles with free throws or making a six-foot putt could never do.
