Be True to Your
Two Schools

November 23, 2009

Like many of our neighboring communities including Farmington, Walled Lake, Livonia and South Lyon, Novi has more than one High School.

Both schools represent our city with dignity, and both have been recognized nationally. This Saturday, at 1:00pm at Ford Field, the Novi Catholic Central Shamrocks will take face off against the Sterling Heights Stevenson Titans for the Division I State Football Championship.

I will be there. It is a priority for me. This goes way beyond football, bragging rights, and the quest for a trophy. It’s more than just a game.

Thanksgiving is a time to count your blessings. Look around. It’s been well chronicled. Although participation in HS sports reached an all-time high this year of over 7-million student-athletes, in many communities HS sports have halted completely, or have been severely curtailed due to lack of funds.

Yes, our challenged economy has threatened even the most basic tenets of being American; The opportunity to receive a world-class education regardless of race, gender, or socio-economic status. And, make no mistake; sports have become an integral part of education. The life lessons gleaned on the field are timeless in their significance, and immeasurable in their contribution.

Count your blessings. Here in Novi, we have not only one, but two fine High School Athletic Programs and you can show your thanks by supporting the Shamrocks this Saturday.

Be true to your school(s). Be true to your community. Most importantly, be true to your kids. They are our future.

The future is now…

Go Shamrocks. I’ll be there. High School sports remain an important part of my continuing education, too.

There’s a lot I can learn from these outstanding young men.

And, I am thankful…
