Wildcat Pom-Pon: You bet it’s a real sport

November 16, 2009

I have a cynical friend in Bristol, CT that often states tongue in cheek… that ‘a sport can't be a sport unless you can’; "Trash talk, pull a groin, and place a wager!" Well, in the physically demanding sport of Pom-Pon, you can easily do all three but I wouldn't bet against the Novi Wildcats anytime soon.

Just take a look at theie recent successes! And, it should be noted the Pom-Pon Wildcats were State Champions in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2001, as well as garnering runner-up honors in 2000. Wildcat Pom-Pon is not only a sport; it's a great combination of athletic competition, entertainment, and the residue of hard work and dedication.

"Pom-Pon is a sport that combines the attributes of virtually all the major sports, " an ESPN analyst stated, and "It's critical to be in top shape to compete."

Clearly, Pom-Pon combines athleticism, balance, agility, muscle strength and stamina. Having watched the team perform at many halftime events, it's also evident these well-choreographed routines require precision, discipline, and teamwork. The teamwork extends beyond the effort on the floor as well, as cooperation between the athletes is critical to performing at consistently high levels.

Novi High School will field 56 teams in 23 sports during this school year. Pom-Pon can be considered among the leaders. The numerous successes are a great tribute to the coaches, athletes, and parental support involved with the Pom-Pon team as they endeavor to represent the High School and the community.

In addition to competing successfully, providing entertainment, and representing Novi High School athletics, the Pom-Pon experience has provided a vehicle for several Wildcat alumni to receive athletic scholarships. As is the case in all sports, the experience itself is an integral part of a comprehensive education.

Novi Wildcat Pom-Pon is a real sport, and it's much more. You've done a great job on behalf of the school and the community.

And you've done it loud and proud…
