October 26, 2009 The heartbroken team took the field for their pregame warmups holding hands, to the loud cheers of the visiting fans. The UConn Huskies had heavy hearts Saturday as they invaded West Virginia, for what would be possibly the toughest game of their lives. Their star cornerback, Jasper Howard had been fatally stabbed just six days earlier. The task of playing West Virginia would be tough enough, but their thoughts and spirits were fixated on their tragic loss. Before the game in a show of true class and sportsmanship, the West Virginia players lined up and shook of the hands of their opponents, then they took the field and knocked heads. West Virginia returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, so UConn would have to reach even deeper. After multiple lead changes and a high-drama finish, UConn fell just short, but only on the scoreboard. Across the nation and on the airwaves these young men and their coaching staff were given praise for their courage and effort. The visiting fans and opposing team gave them comfort and respect, and they were well deserving. The Huskies left town with their heads held high, they live to fight another day, with dignity. Only in the World of Sports can people set aside politics, race and divisiveness, temporarily making the world a better place, even for a short time. And, in that short time, the things that took place will resonate positively for a lifetime... (c) 2009 Novi
