October 11, 2009 This column is not about box scores or game scores. There are plenty of other places to get that information. It’s about perspective. It’s about recognizing that the world of sport and the game of life and joined at the hip. The good habits learned on the field, translate off the field as well, at home, work, school, and the community. So the fact that Novi lost to Northville Friday night in football, is only referenced because I want to make a point. First, congratulations to Northville, prior to last Friday, Novi had beaten their cross-town rival 10-straight years. For now, they’ll waive good-bye to the Jug, but not without recognizing its symbolism. Additionally, Novi’s loss means they won’t be going to the playoffs, either. Prior to this season, the Cat’s had been in the MSHAA tournament 9 of the last 10 years. Novi suffered many injuries this year, but I know they won’t use that as an excuse. They’ll be back next year, and they still have 2 games left to show their Wildcat pride. The football team here in Novi has been a source of pride for many years. The Home field is one of the nicest venues around, and the community has rallied around this program, making it one of the most respected in the state. The moral of the story is simple. Winning is not always defined by wins and losses. No one goes undefeated, and no one bats 1.000. No team in any sport continues to win ad infinitum. But winners are defined by their attitude, their effort and they way the conduct themselves. That’s what makes the Novi Wildcat football program the winners they are. Playoffs or not, you’re still a source of pride for the community. Thought for the week: That's what learning
is, after all; not whether we lose the game, but how we lose and how
we've changed because of it and what we take away from it that we never
had before, to apply to other games. Losing, in a curious way, is
winning. (c) 2009 Novi
