Into every season,
a little rain must fall

September 13, 2009

It’s hard to escape my So. Cal roots, and I don’t want to. As such, I still follow the California Angels, the team I grew up rooting for. In April, they sustained a horrible tragedy when their ace rookie pitcher, Nick Adenhart, was killed by a drunk driver just hours after making his successful Major League debut.

With heavy hearts, the team has rallied around their fallen comrade and they are in first place, and they’re featured in Sports Illustrated this week.

I am reminded of this because, seven short years ago, Novi’s own Brent Pantaleo was stricken with cancer while trying to navigate his junior year on the football team. 2002 ended up being a magical season even though the team started 1-2.

And, congratulations are in order to Tab Kellepourey’s Novi Wildcats for an impressive win on the road Friday night, after starting this season 0-2. In this decade, his teams have been resilient and mentally tough, and I believe that will continue this year as well.

The moral of the story is simple. For a great many people, and teams, when the rains come too often people point fingers and blame, while feeling sorry for themselves. But successful teams, and people, don’t wait for the storm to stop before they feel good about themselves. They take decisive action, they rally, and they focus on solution-oriented activity for the moment.

The great Vince Lombardi used to say, “We never really lost a game, we just ran out of time.” Bad things happen to good people and good teams all the time, but they aren’t as readily noticeable because the cream always rises to the top.

Don’t be surprised if the California Angels win the World Series, like they did in 2002. And don’t be surprised if the Novi Wildcats win the KLAA. It’s rally time…

Thought for the week: It’s not about planning the party after the storm is over, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.
