September 8, 2009 Competition is a funny thing. It can bring out the best, and worst in people. The recent allegations against the University of Michigan and their practice schedules are ridiculous. So, why did it happen? It’s simple. Because of their success ov er the last 100-years, some people are jealous of that and they are rooting for them to fail. It’s a waste of time and energy, but it’s amazing how many people out there feel they help their own cause when they root for others to fail. In my life, I know it’s happened to me. People have rooted for me to fail, and have rooted for my kids to fail. Now I know the vast majority of people don’t think this way, but plenty still do…It doesn't bother me, it motivates me. Frankly, I think it’s a sign of respect. People take shots at Michigan because they’ve been successful, and some people can’t deal with that. It makes them feel inferior. But typically, naysayers don’t shoot at the bottom-feeders, they take their shots at those who have had success. It’s one thing to be motivated by someone that is doing well, it’s quite another to wish them ill will simply because of their achievements. Ask Tom Brady, the future Hall-of-Fame QB. While at Michigan , he was given Million-dollar advice by Coach Lloyd Carr when he asked why he wasn’t starting because he believed he was better than the current starter. “Worry about yourself,” Carr said. Brady did, and the rest is history. Competition can bring out the best, and worst in people. It’s up to you… Thought for the week: You’ll never get ahead of somebody by trying to get even with them.
