What an Impression

You can observe a lot by watching
-Yogi Berra

A lot of history has taken place since my last column in mid-June, so I am only going to focus on the event that has left the most lasting impression on me.

On April 4th while in Las Vegas, I placed a friendly wager that Tiger Woods would NOT win a Major this season. I don’t root against Tiger, quite the contrary; it’s just that I’d made some observations about him over the last couple of years.

To me, his mental game has changed dramatically. Multiple times over the course of a round, he slams his club on the ground, drops F-bombs with regularity and his facial expressions, demeanor, and body language suggest he has changed a lot.

His self-applied pressure to win 18-majors, (which will tie him with Jack Nicklaus) has consumed him. That’s not a bad thing, it’s just that the attributes that made him great ever since his childhood in Cypress, California have now done a complete 180.

As the Novi teams prepare in anticipation for another great fall season, it’s important to note that in addition to taking your body on the field of play, you take your heart, your mind and your soul.

The greatest competitors in the sports world and in the real world have a terrific way of dealing with failure, setback, rejection, and temporary defeat. They know that no one goes undefeated, or bats 1.000 in life or in sports.

But by staying mentally relaxed, even though it is very challenging in the heat of battle, they keep themselves in position to win, allowing their life force and their physical gifts to work for them naturally.

Tiger Woods has earned over $7 million this season on the PGA Tour, so by most accounts he’s still a huge success. But, my observations in April turned out to be right.

He’s changed, and only time will tell if he can change back to the way he was.

Thought for the Week: “A fool will curse the darkness, while a wise man will light a candle.”
