You Can Always
Comeback

May 4, 2009

This week served as a metaphor for one of sports greatest life lessons. No matter how things look today, you can always comeback.

At the Kentucky Derby, pundits laughed while the trainers and owners of “Mine that Bird,” a 50-1 underdog drove 21 hours across country to compete in the Kentucky Derby. Their competitors weren’t laughing when their horse won by 7 lengths.

When Alexander Ovechkin said his Washington Capitals would come back from a 3-1 deficit in their series against the New York Rangers, few believed him. But, his grit and will came through in the end and his team is now in Round 2 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The World Champion Boston Celtics lost their first game at home in a blowout, and have missed their star Kevin Garnett the entire series against the Chicago Bulls. But they toughed it out despite being behind in their series 1-0, and 2-1, to capture Game 7 Saturday and they showed the heart of a World Champion by advancing.

Meanwhile, Manny Pacquaio defeated Ricky Hatton handily to become the World Junior Welterweight Champion, and arguably the greatest fighter on the planet right now.

You probably haven’t heard his story of unthinkable poverty, squalor and strife growing up in the Phillippines. He ran away from home at age 15 after enduring an incredibly abusive relationship with his father.

Young Manny had a pet dog which he loved, until his father killed the dog and ate him! This is a true story.

Pacquaio’s comeback story is much too long to tell in this column, but the point is simple; the four examples listed here refused to settle. They were determined to comeback and they did.

There will be more stories like this in the future. Will you be one of them? The fact is, the opportunity for greatness typically begins as precisely the time most people give up.
