April 13, 2009 The sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the bats were swinging last Saturday as Rick Green’s Novi Wildcats took the field against Country Day. And soon the Wildcats will take the field against their new ‘league rival,’ the Northville Mustangs coached by John Kostrzewa. Over the years much has been made about the Jug rivalry in football and the tremendous soccer matchups between these two schools, but right before our very eyes, Coaches Green and Kostrzewa have truly built fine baseball programs that have produced oodles of Division I and professional talent. Just in the last 5 years, Northville has sent 9 players into the college ranks and had 2 drafted by Major League teams. Meanwhile, Coach Green boasts the same type of resume, headed by current Kansas City Royal Mitch Maier and current U of M baseball Captain Kevin Cislo. In talking with Coach Kostrzewa Saturday, it was an absolute treat to see his genuine enthusiasm, vast knowledge, and dedication to the game of baseball. And just a few feet away, watching Coach Green man the 3rd base coaching duties while keep his squad focused on every aspect of the game, you got the feeling that spring is officially here. And, what a fabulous facility the Novi Wildcats have developed. It has truly matured into one of the finest HS diamonds anywhere, complete with full batting cages and an electronic scoreboard. In late May, Novi will host regional competition as well, and hopefully one of the two local teams, Northville or Novi will still be fighting for a State Championship. Either way, hats off to coaches Green and Kostrzewa for doing such a fine job of producing talent and representing their respective schools and communities. (c) 2009 Novi
