March 22, 2009 To those who would say ‘it’s only a game’ and mean it, they must think the Grand Canyon is simply a hole in Arizona. It’s not just about sports it’s about people and their quest for fulfillment. The spring sports schedule is about to begin for Novi athletes and right now the canvas is blank. The opportunity to paint a masterpiece is on the horizon, but there are no guarantees. Hence, madness… and although the dictionary offers many definitions, the best one says it stands for ‘intense excitement or enthusiasm.’ There isn’t anything disingenuous about the world of sports. It’s an exclusive club and you can’t buy your way on the field. On the other hand if you’re Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, you get to act. If your last name is Trump and your father’s name is Donald, you most likely have entrée in the business world of Real Estate. But if you’re Appalachian State, nobody hands you anything. You have to do it on the field. The same way Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester did. Three years ago he almost died of cancer, but in October 2007 he was winning a World Series for his team. And yes, Tiger Woods was born with a gift, but he hits 1,000 golf balls per day, and his work ethic and intensity suggest he knows that tomorrow isn’t promised to anybody. Moreover, the World of Sport doesn’t necessarily care what you did last year, your next game is far more important than your last result. The scripts written in the world of sports are terrific, and no one ever knows how it will end. Every game and every season has a chance to become an epic novel, every time… The games can make hardened men cry and young kids grow up right before your very eyes. And the combatants don’t need to be world class professionals. In fact, they can be our sons and daughters. Sports are about passion, loyalty, and family. They can make respected, tenured, education luminaries look silly in their opinions, because in the world of sports, like life, you can plan everything but the outcome.
