Hail to the Victor

March 15, 2009

When Novi’s Kevin Cislo stepped into the box for his Michigan Wolverines against the New York Mets in a recent Spring Training exhibition game in Port St. Lucie, Florida, you could say that at least for a day, he was in the big leagues.

And when he singled sharply off of former AL All-Star Freddy Garcia to right field to lead off the game, you could say that he belonged in the big leagues. Cislo had 3 hits that day and as he heads into his Senior year as a Captain of the baseball team, to say he’s been successful since leaving Wildcat Country would be an understatement.

A four-year letter winner and multiple All Big-Ten selection, Cislo has played three positions and has been a key cog in leading Michigan into the postseason NCAA tournament in 2007, and 2008. Currently his Wolverines are ranked 25th in the nation.

Perhaps the best part about Cislo is his work ethic and humility. Over the years, so many Novi alum have ventured into the world of collegiate athletics, talking smack as they headed out the door, only to wash out and blame everyone else for their troubles.

And when you run into their parents, they blame everyone else too…

Not Cislo. In fact in March 2005 I wrote about Kevin Cislo in this very column while he was a senior at Novi HS. I had participated in a baseball workout with his team and had made some observations about the great habits and maturity he’d developed at such young age.

The leadership qualities he’d exhibited carried over nicely and he never stopped working hard.

And in June, I fully expect Cislo to sign a professional contract and get a chance to go away from home and possibly make it to the big leagues for real.

He’s already shown he belongs…
