January 4, 2009 In February 1977, I was privileged to have an opportunity to play in an international baseball tournament in Guadalajara. Before leaving, our coaches emphasized over and over, that our actions, our words, and our conduct, would be a direct reflection of the school we represented. In other words, whether or not we were on or off the field, and even before, during and after games, we were still representing our school. I never forgot those words. Over the years, Matt Gorman, Josh Buck, and many others have played in Michigan Stadium to participate in the prestigious East-West MHSAA Football All-Star game. They were representing Novi High School in more ways than one. Novi HS graduate Tim Moore competed in
Ireland a few years back in an international cross-country meet, and he
was also representing Novi High School, just like he did when he
traveled to Wisconsin to compete in a national meet. Josh Churella was
representing as well last August as a member of the U.S. Olympic team in
Beijing, and Matt Harsha-Strong was the recipient of the MHSAA
scholar/athlete award and a class act while representing Novi High
School Sports have a way of unifying people through competition, sacrifice, and common goals. And while sports do build character, they also reveal character. Vince Lombardi once said, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." But what he meant was your work ethic, your attitude, and your desire to win were the things that were really paramount. How you carry yourself, while representing your school, are the impressions most indelibly etched upon observers. Conducting yourself with dignity, and
representing your school with honor, makes everybody a winner. (c) 2008 Novi
