A Real Choke Job

November 17, 2008

It’s been 10-years since Latrell Sprewell choked his coach. It cost the NBA forward his career, basically. At the time however, athletes were ruling the roost, but things have changed.

I wrote a piece for ESPN at the time, and I indicated that I thought it was official that constituted authority in our society was in full, mindless, retreat. In other words, respect for authority was out-the-window, and spoiled athletes were leading the charge.

I felt it was important to note that it was an important observation, because it not only threatened the world of sport, but the essence of our entire society.

The ancient Romans taught us the value of authority for the good of the masses, and in creating the table of organization, they build aqueducts, formed military chains of command and constructed a great civilization, bringing order where there had been chaos. They harnessed human energy to work for the common good, and with their organizational genius and leadership, society advanced.

Thanks to leadership and the respect for authority, the system worked and flourished. But when leadership goes awry, and the respect for leadership disappears, the ability of the western civilization to survive and grow through teamwork and control goes with it, and the foundation crumbles.

Why did Latrell Sprewell choke his coach? Because he could… But things are changing back to the way we were. From the High School level, to college and in the professional rank, the petulant behavior is no longer being tolerated. Athletes are being reprimanded, suspended and in extreme cases, dismissed from the team.

History will show the Roman legions routinely defeated numerically superior forces when their respect for authority resulted in organizational genius, but without it, their Empire collapsed.

As a member of a team, whether at Novi HS, or college, work or the community the only way that can happen is if you let it…

Respect your coach, your boss, your leader…

It’s up to you, don’t choke…
