November- A Big Anniversary Month for the Wildcat Faithful

November 2, 2008

If you’re big on anniversaries, and I am, then November recalls memories of two of the greatest games in Novi Pigskin history.

Friday November 7th, 2008 will mark 5-years to the day of the epic District Championship in which Novi defeated Adrian 27-25. In a recent article John Osborne said it was his favorite Novi game off all-time.

I would be inclined to agree because my son Joey scored a key touchdown in that game, but what I remember most was the tremendous fan support from both sides. I believe there were 8,000 people in attendance, and in addition the game was broadcast on three radio stations! WOVI 89.5fm here in Novi, thanks to the great efforts of David Legg, and a radio station in Adrian as well as a 3rd in Lenawee County graced the already jam-packed press box.

It would take three columns to cover all the details, but about once a year, I’ll break out the tape of that game, and I still find myself in awe of the great community spirit that represented the greatness of Novi football.

And, 20 years ago this month, in November 1988, Novi squared off against Traverse City in what people still talk about as the one of greatest Semi-Final contests in MHSAA history. By inches, Novi missed out on advancing to the finals in which Traverse City easily bested Catholic Central, indicating that the best two teams in the State had already faced off. That Novi/Traverse City game was possibly the defacto Championship game.

The point of reminiscing about these two great games is simple. They were great in their own right, but the greatest game in Novi history is yet to be played. Given their success again this season, Wildcat football has indeed established itself as one of the premier programs in the State.
