October 13, 2008 I highly recommend the movie, “The Express,” which chronicles the story of the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner. It was of course Ernie Davis from Syracuse University in 1961, but the movie is really about grace under pressure and being able to deal with whatever life throws at you on or off the field. That ties in beautifully with the Novi Wildcats’ 6th victory Friday night over crosstown rival, and now league rival, Northville on the road! Along with it comes bragging rights to the Baseline Jug for another year. There’s an old saying in sports that says you ‘have to play the team that gets off the bus.’ It’s a metaphor of course, but it means what it says, that whoever or whatever you face, that’s your opponent like it or not. My hat's off to the Novi Wildcat football program, as once again they will find themselves back in the postseason with an inaugural KLAA league championship right on their doorstep. In high school, this is an amazing feat because teams and programs turn over every 2-3 years due to graduation. In other words, new players come in and you have to play the hand you’re dealt. In addition, Novi faced new competition this season while adjusting to a new conference, which included visiting the State-Finalist Livonia Stevenson Spartans. The ‘Cats not only scored a road victory, but they’ve been undefeated on the road this season, and they are doing what it takes to win regardless of the circumstances. The Novi Express rides on, largely because of their great ability to take on whoever or whatever gets off the bus. And they manage to find a way to come out on top… (c) 2008 Novi
