August 4, 2008 Novi High School Class of 2000's Mitch Maier is back in the Major Leagues with the Kansas City Royals. Meanwhile he’s doing it in grand fashion as he’s batting .308. When Maier came to bat Sunday against pitcher Clayton Richard of the White Sox, it was an interesting juxtaposition. Richard attended the University of Michigan on a football scholarship, but played baseball and did so well he went that direction. Maier was also recruited by Lloyd Carr at the University of Michigan as a preferred walk-on in football and I believe he could have played there. A great athlete, Maier chose baseball, matriculated at the University of Toledo, and was a first round draft choice in 2004. He made it to the big leagues in late 2006, and was instrumental in knocking the Tigers out of first place on the final weekend of the season. As you recall, the Tigers were the Wild Card entrant that season, in part due to Maier’s timely hitting and a great running catch in right field on the last day of the season. This isn’t the first time I’ve written about Mitch Maier. I projected him as a Major Leaguer in a column I wrote back in July 2005. He’s got a lot of pluses and every time he got his chance on every level, he came through, in baseball and even in football as well. Mitch Maier, from Wildcat to Royalty. You’re back in the big leagues and after Sunday’s 3-5 performance, it looks like you belong. (c) 2008 Novi
