First Novi,
then the World
Where are they now continues

July 28, 2008

It was 10-years ago, November 19th, 1998 that Novi HS hockey was born. Head Coach Dan Phelps brought his special brand of coaching, teaching and motivating to a group of young kids that would learn a lot about pucks, and even more about life.

I enjoyed watching every minute of their 0-9 start because you could see the city on the hill taking shape.

Soon, the team would become a state powerhouse, capturing KVC and Regional titles with regularity, becoming a fixture in the Frozen Four, and a program that was recognized as one of Michigan’s finest.

Now it is only fitting on the 10-year anniversary that Dan Phelps takes over the reigns at Adrian College. They are a 2nd year program, but it won’t be long before you hear them making noise around the state.

Some things were meant to be and this is one of them. And along those lines, congratulations are in order for Novi’s Stephanie Crawford and Kelli Walker, as they return home from Little Rock, Arkansas with a National Championship in soccer.

They are members of the U19 Bloomfield Force, and they defeated the FC-Slammers from Southern California to capture the US Youth Soccer Championship in their 19 and under Division.

After losing to the Slammers Wednesday to open the tournament, they reeled off four straight victories and Kelli Walker was instrumental in setting up a goal to tie the game 1-1 after the Slammers had scored first seven minutes into the contest.

Congratulations to Phelps, Crawford and Walker. Wherever you go, the City of Novi is proud to call you one of ours…
