June 29, 2008 Last week the Detroit Tigers hosted a celebration of the 1968 World Champions. Prior to the game there were player introductions and an 8-minute video montage of the season’s highlights. Even though it had been 40-years, you should’ve seen the looks on the faces of these men. They are all in their seventies, but they looked like little kids. They watched the video, complete with commentary, music and key turning points in the season with great wonderment, and the reason is simple. Even though they know how the story ends, it was the journey they revered. There were many obstacles that year, and reaching that level of achievement was never guaranteed. The story of how they prevailed was more captivating than the end result. It was the days of uncertainty when they were faced with the slimmest of chances while they displayed the biggest of hearts that formed the most lasting memories, and that is the essence of what makes the world of sports so special. When you reflect on the accomplishments of the Class of 2008, it’s easy to forget the times the chips were down, and even though this group was highly successful, it was the tough times that will form their character and prepare them for the World ahead. Novi HS will welcome in the Class of 2012 in just a few weeks and soon they’ll forming memories of their own. And the truth is, in their preparation during summer camps etc., they are probably already formulating some memories right now. They just don’t know it yet. But, the future always manages to arrive ahead of schedule, time flies… Just ask the 1968 Tigers. (c) 2008 Novi
