More than just a Game
“You can observe a lot by watching!”

I’m a sucker for comeback stories. Stories about people that get handed a lump of coal and turn it into a diamond pendant. Show me the guy that gets knocked down 100 times and then wins the race on the 101st. They’re amazing accounts of struggle, perseverance, will, and ultimate victory. They’re irresistible and I always manage to find them because I’m looking for them.

The reason is simple. Everybody knows I love baseball, but my favorite sport is people. Sports are played by people, and the world of sport is a metaphor for the game of life.

But, when I’m out and about, I don’t try very hard to be a part of the pack. That’s how I roll. And, for that reason I may be misunderstood. I love people but I typically keep my distance until I really get to know someone.

Nonetheless, all the while I’m paying attention. And, I trust my eyes because they tell me a lot, and as I sit back and observe, I make it my business to never miss a trick…Hopefully, at least.

There’s an old saying that you inherit three things from your parents; Your looks, your last name, and your religion. Well, there’s a 4th as well… Children inherent their will to win in the face of setback and uncertainty, even if some aren’t quite sure how to execute when the trouble arrives. It is however, a skill that must be learned.

That’s where parents come in. And the purpose of this missive today is to tip a cap to the parents in Novi that I have come to know in the last several years. It is evident that the sacrifice and commitment these people have bestowed upon their kids has created a foundation for their future success.

And it wasn’t always easy. But when the lights didn’t turn green as often as we’d like, you were there with the right words and the proper care and feeding. And now the finished product looks sparkling…

In the end, you knew that preparing your kids for the world and their future, was more than just a game, it was a way of life. Sports provided the vehicle for our sons and daughters to learn that good habits on the field that also work well off the field. And the message resonated because the parents took full advantage of their roles as coaches and teachers as well.

Happy Fathers (and Mothers) day to all of you…

Thanks to your efforts, it’s looking better than ever for the home team.
