True Courage falls extinct, when those with vision fail to act

April 21, 2008

The 1993 Dallas Cowboys were adrift. Even though they were defending World Champions, demons were at their heels.

All-Pro WR Michael Irvin was facing allegations of drug possession and an unsavory strip-club incident. All-Pro RB Emmitt Smith was having an embittered contract dispute with owner Jerry Jones. QB Troy Aikman was the subject of vicious rumors about his personal life and the fact he’d lost control of the lockeroom. It was written that he was no no longer seen as a leader.

A closed door meeting with all parties got the team moving back in the right direction. When they put their heads together, they realized that another Super Bowl victory was well within their grasp, all they had to do was to go get it…as a team.

They knew their destiny, and they realized that the only way they could be beaten was to beat themselves. They knew their combination of experience, talent, hard work and desire was a rare commodity. In other words, the assembled collection of talent was like a lottery ticket. Would they turn it in, or throw it away?

They held their own fate and they knew it. Immediately, they re-focused on blocking, tackling and out-scrapping their opponents. They played as a team, and stopped the individual whining. They didn’t care who got credit, they just knew the pain of losing would far override the joy of winning, and they weren’t going to be denied.

They knew if they wanted it bad enough, as a team, that no one could stop them. All they had to do was want it bad enough, and back it up with a team effort that no one could stop.

For the record, they lost 4 games that season, including a Week 2 Stunner against the Buffalo Bills. But they came back and won all the games that mattered, including Super Bowl XXVII against you guessed it, the Buffalo Bills, 30-13. Once again, the Dallas Cowboys were World Champions, even though the road was rocky and fraught with challenges.

History will show they were not defined by their early season debacles and their 0-2 start, but rather how they reacted, re-grouped and re-committed themselves to excellence. Once you’ve won a championship, or two or three, it becomes easier not harder.

The truth is, going back to a place you’ve already found before, is easier than trying to get to a place you’ve never been.

Everybody knows who I’m talking about. You’ve been there before, and you’re going back. Especially if you show a little courage and a lot of teamwork.

All you have to do is want it bad enough.
