I Remember You

April 14, 2008

The NFL draft is a couple of weeks away, and as the holder of an NFL credential, I am very involved in the research and information of players and prospects. Interestingly enough, it is typical to find the most talked about stories are not the 40-times, Combine performances or game-film highlights, but rather accounts of a player’s character.

Last year, Florida’s Marcus Thomas was a lock to be a first-round draft choice. A gifted defensive tackle, things were going great until Coach Urban Meyer kicked him off the team for failing a drug test. He ended up being a low-round draft choice by the Denver Broncos but it wasn’t the same and he cost himself millions. (Oh, by the way he still hasn’t learned his lesson, last month he was arrested on suspicion of cocaine possession).

This year Oklahoma State WR Adarius Bowman was considered ‘the goods.’ Another sure 1st round draft pick, that all changed April 1st after his arrest for marijuana possession. The only April fool is him, because he cost himself dearly.

You’ve probably read about Cincinnati Bengals talented WR Chris Henry finally being cut last week after getting arrested again and the list goes on from Pac Man Jones, to Tank Johnson, et al. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

One of my old coaches had a poster in his office that said, “Every time you do something good, you get an ‘atta-boy’, and every time you screw up you get an ‘aw-shucks’ but the word wasn’t ‘shucks’ but rather it was four-letter profanity. The moral was simple… One ‘aw-shucks’ would wipe out the last 20 ‘atta-boys’ and you would have to pay the consequences.

And the worst part is, every time somebody of accomplishment gets in trouble, make no mistake, there are a ton of haters out there that are glad it happened to you. They’ll talk smack about you behind your back, but of course kiss your butt to your face because they are gutless wonders with miserable little lives. Why give them the satisfaction?

I look forward to covering the NFL draft on April 26-27, and I’ll be curious to see what happens to Adarius Bowman. He has no one to blame but himself for how he’ll be perceived and remembered and now he gets to deal with it.

How do you want to be remembered?
