More District Musings
‘That’s why they play the game’ -Grantland Rice

2/24/08

The honorable thing to do is to congratulate fellow KVC members South Lyon and Brighton for winning their respective Girls Varsity Basketball District playoff tournaments last week.

From the ‘I hate it when I’m right’ category, I still contend that hosting the tournament is a huge benefit and should be a reward for a good regular season, which shouldn’t be besmirched by the fact that Novi fell to Salem in their opening game by 13 points, and Salem proceeded to get clobbered by host Ladywood 47-32.

Meanwhile, at home Brighton deserves credit for defeating Walled Lake Western, a team that had bested Novi at home earlier in the year. Continuing the solid representation of the KVC, the South Lyon Lions enjoyed home cooking in their win over Ann Arbor Huron.

But onward and upward, as that is now water under the bridge. This week I believe you’ll see the Novi Boys Basketball team emerge with another District Championship, the first since 2004 when the Wildcats three-peated.

Yes, they are at home and that will help. And yes, they also won the KVC this season as well but that won’t matter now because you still have to play the games.

What does matter is this is a pretty good team. My busy schedule finally allowed me to see their final regular season game Friday against a talented Flint Southwestern team that had recently battled #1 Saginaw before falling by just 10 points.

The 2008 version of Novi Boys Basketball impressed me. Their transition game was excellent, they played aggressive defense, they made excellent decisions with the basketball, and most importantly they look to be in sync with their coach. They are relaxed and confident and they give a good effort. Under first year Coach Cory Heitsch, this program looks to be in the right hands.

I stand by my prediction that they will win the District tournament this week, and it’s not just because they are hosting it. They’ll win because they’re the best team in this field.

Of course, they still have to play the games…
