More than just a sport

1/21/08

I have a cynical friend at ESPN that says a 'sport can't be a sport unless you can trash talk, pull a groin, and place a wager on it!'

Well, in the physically demanding sport of Pom-Pon, you can do all three but if you bet against the Wildcats, that might not be a good idea, as you may not know they are 4-time State Champions.

We talk often about the 56 sports teams in 23 different categories, but other groups such as the band and the Pom-Pon and cheer teams deserve a lot of credit as well. They work just as hard, their contributions to the school are significant and we should never take for granted the ancillary benefit they bring to sporting events at Novi High School.

Pom-Pon requires athleticism, balance, agility, muscle strength, stamina, and of course plenty of teamwork. The well choreographed routines require precision, discipline and timing.

My friend at ESPN would agree. Novi Wildcat Pom-Pon is a real sport, and it's much more. And in addition, the Wildcat Pom-Pon teams as well as the band have represented Novi High School very well and they always will.

You can bet on it...
