The college football bowl season almost feels like ancient history, but this year’s Holiday Bowl in San Diego between Arizona State and Texas should be considered special by Novi football fans. In the 4th quarter, 2005 graduate Jarrell Woods scored on a 2-yard touchdown run, and for me it was awesome to watch.

His touchdown represented the culmination of years of hard work, desire, moving around the country and never giving up. As a senior, Woods had virtually no offers to play Division I college football so he walked on at the University of Utah. He earned a spot on the roster but soon realized it wasn’t going to work out.

He transferred to West LA Junior College and and had a stellar season in 2006, rushing for over 1,300 yards in a very tough, competitive league. In California, junior college sports are often proving grounds for budding D1 prospects and the competition is fierce. He caught the eye of Arizona State Football Coach Dennis Erickson and became a Sun Devil later in 2007.

He was buried on the depth chart, but worked very hard in the weight room, increasing his Bench press to 425lbs and his squat to 605lbs. Add to that a vertical leap of 39 inches and a legitimate 40-time of 4.5, and he started to turn heads.

So when he took the field against the Texas Longhorns, you had the feeling something special was going to happen. Very few athletes in our area have been willing to go the distance the way that Jarrell Woods has. His ESPN Highlight is something he can cherish for the rest of his life.

The touchdown was worth 6 points, but the experience was worth a million, and proved once again that nothing is impossible if you’re willing to pay the price.
