12/9/07 A rising star in the world of journalism that I know told me that while he was in college, a certain professor told him to “get out of sports, you’re too good for that!” His response was swift and sure and in the process he lost a lot of respect for that professor. But the young star knew that his purpose transcended more than just a game. He wasn’t simply writing about sports he was writing about people and their quest for fulfillment. With just a few contests on the slate for Novi High School teams before we usher in 2008, don’t tell any of the locals it’s just a game. Pan the crowd and watch the nervous mothers as their daughters are at the free throw line. It’s much more than a simple game. Note the emotion invested and the energy of the crowd.
There isn’t anything disingenuous about the world of sports. It’s an
exclusive club and you can’t buy your way on the field. But if you’re Appalachian State, nobody hands you anything. You have to do it on the field. The same way Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester did. Two years ago he almost died of cancer, but last October he was winning a World Series for his team. And Sports doesn’t necessarily care what you did last year, your next game is far more important than your last result. The scripts written in the world of sports are terrific, and no one ever knows how it will end. Every game and every season has a chance to become an epic novel, every time… The games can make hardened men cry and young kids grow up right before your very eyes. And the combatants don’t need to be world class professionals. In fact, they can be our sons and daughters. Yes, these events are much more than just a game. They
can even make a respected, tenured professor look silly in his opinion.
Another great year for the Wildcat family, and we’re all looking forward to 2008. Let the games begin… (c) 2007 Novi
