The Ford Field of Dreams

There’s an old Visa commercial that goes something like this: Price of Parking- $5 dollars… Price of admission- $10 dollars… Game Program and Yearbook- $3 Dollars… Watching Livonia Stevenson and Macomb Dakota square off in the MHSAA Division I State Championship Football game at Ford Field- Priceless!

Given the pomp, circumstance and community celebration that goes along with these events, you don’t even have to have a personal investment or a rooting interest to enjoy the experience for all it’s worth. That’s why I went, High School sports is the last bastion of competition where that combatants aren’t paid. Of course the game did have a Novi connection of sorts.

Dakota beat Novi Catholic Central 17-7, to advance to the final game, while Livonia Stevenson got the better of Novi in the District Championship game back on Nov. 2nd on their way to the ‘Ship.’

And, Novi will play Livonia Stevenson next season as part of their 2008 schedule and I’m already looking forward to the game. Here’s why…

There was a little encounter that took place on the field with around 2:00 minutes to go in the 3rd Quarter as Dakota had just scored again to make the score 41-14. Stevenson’s star RB/DB, sophomore Austin White crossed paths with Dakota QB Mitchell Lovett around the 35-yd line and stuck out his arm. The two competitors slapped hands in a symbolic show of mutual respect.

In the heat of battle and with his team getting beat, White had the maturity, presence of mind, and class to give congratulations to his counterpart. A gesture like that simply doesn’t go unnoticed in my book, and it says a lot.

I know that people marvel at White’s athleticism and he has been talked about a lot in MHSAA circles. Now you can be equally impressed with the terrific display of sportsmanship he showed in what must’ve been a difficult moment for him and his teammates.

The good news is Austin White still has two more years to make another State Championship run, but they may have to get past Novi again to do it. And we get to see those two schools face off again next season at least once, maybe twice.

Priceless…
