It’s that time of year again
Out of acorns, grow Oaks

8/20/07

I’m a sucker for comeback stories. Stories about people who get handed a lump of coal and turn it into a diamond. Stories about people that get knocked down over and over, but keep getting up and they come out on top.

25 years ago next month, Servite HS in Anaheim, California challenged the #1 football team in the nation, Moeller HS in Cincinnati to a game. Servite was a good team, but they were 7-3 the season before, and Moeller had been undefeated for years. Moeller’s Coach Gerry Faust, had just left to take the Notre Dame job.

Moeller agreed, but Servite would have to make the trek to Cincinnati if they were serious. Midway through the 4th QTR, Servite led the nations best 15-14! But the Midwest humidity and the grit of the mythical National Champs resulted in Moeller coming out on top 22-15.

Fast forward to the present. On Sept 1st, I will head to Cincinnati to see So. Cal’s Mission Viejo HS play Cincinnati Moeller as part of the Kirk Herbstreit ‘Ohio vs. the Nation’ challenge that will pit 8 games from HS teams around the country converging in Cincinnati.

A small idea grew into a major event. Many of the games will be seen on ESPN.

But there are plenty of inspirational stories right here in Novi and that’s what this column is about. In the end sports are about struggle, will, and finding a way to victory and that is not always measured in the final score.

Sports teach us about teamwork, leadership and the fact you are capable of accomplishing more than you think you are.

Next week a complete array of Novi teams will take the field for a full fall sports schedule, including their first home football game vs. Ann Arbor Pioneer.

Many kids will grow up during this time and these events will help to shape their ultimate destiny. The sky is the limit. It is true… out of acorns, grow oaks.

Let the games begin…
