7/9/07 When David Beckham arrived on American soil and checked in Saturday night for his first action as a midfielder for the Los Angeles Galaxy, the new US soccer became an official member of the MLS. While we’ve been spoiled by the exploits of the Novi Girls 3-Time Defending State Champion soccer team, commercially the sport has yet to truly catch on in the US. That could change however, as Americans have a way of partnering with foreigners to create something as uniquely American as Apple Pie. Ironically, did you know that apple pie dates back to the Chaucer years of England in the 1500’s? Even hot dogs do not have their origin here in America. They in fact date back to Vienna, Austria in the 1400’s. Yet we’ve come to believe they are American inventions. But through the world of sport, nations unite, come together and when the Americans sink their teeth into it, they become universal entities. Often we exchange intellectual property, and typically sports is the instrument. Recently Novi’s Emily Esbrook attended a soccer function in Brazil, and years ago, Finland’s Antti Helkala matriculated at Novi High School, while also playing Varsity Hockey for the Wildcats under Coach Dan Phelps. We are happy to have David Beckham playing for an American team, especially after such distinguished accomplishments for Manchester United and Real Madrid. Sports have helped to unify a troubled world, even on the high school level. You never know, someday soccer might be as American as hot dogs and apple pie! (c) 2007 Novi
