Never underestimate the gratifying feeling a son, daughter, brother, sister, nephew or niece gets when they look up in the stands and know they are supported by their mother, father, brother, sister or aunt and uncle. The powerful vibe of a family member is not only well received, it’s a force multiplier and a motivator. Such has been the case with the Novi Girls Soccer team, the last group of Wildcats standing.

If anyone doubts the magic of family support during Novi’s quest for a 3rd straight State Championship, consider the recent story of Ohio State outfielder Jacob Howell. At the Big Ten baseball tournament hosted in Ann Arbor two weeks ago, Howell decided that he would devote the rest of the season to his younger sister Hannah, who almost died from a brain aneurysm a short time ago.

One of her first postsurgery questions was if she could make the trip to Michigan to see her brother play. The answer was yes, and not only did she inspire Jacob to lead a Buckeye upset as they captured the Big Ten Tournament Championship, her brother batted .600 for the tourney, and what followed was an amazing sequence of events…

Brother Jacob had the game-winning hit against Minnesota in the semi-finals in the 11th inning, and the hit came precisely at 11:00pm! Sister Hannah had her life saving surgery on May 11th, and was released from the hospital 11 days later. And did I mention that Jacob wears uniform #11 for the Ohio State Buckeyes?

Hannah Howell was a given a standing ovation by Ohio State fans at the end of the tournament, and when told about the connections to the #11, her response was, “I guess I have a new lucky number!”

And, Jacob is lucky to have such a wonderful sister. You never know how the power of family love and support will play out when so much positive energy permeates between moms, dads, brothers, sisters, son, daughters, nephews and nieces. The Novi Soccer clan is lucky to have such wonderful daughters, and the kids are lucky to have such terrific families.

You just have to be there to see it…
