The popular sports-talk show, “Sportsnight with Parker and the Man” is back. You can hear it nightly from 9pm-12am, Monday-Friday on WCHB, News-Talk 1200am, and the signal is strong and clear.

Hold that thought…

I know I speak for most athletes when I say that when their playing days are over, they certainly miss the games and the chance to compete, but they equally miss the camaraderie and family atmosphere that permeate most teams. The locker room / clubhouse, the bus trips, the banter, the chance to hang out together, relax and unwind together, and live your lives together.

When you add it up, teammates spend a tremendous amount of time with one another, and only a small percentage of it is during actual game action. So in effect, your team becomes like your family, and in many cases it is your extended family. So in addition to eating, traveling, and sometimes lodging together, you also work as a unit to navigate the ups and downs of life together.

For the rest of your days you will look back and replay those wonderful memories in your mind. The funny conversations, the memorable incidents, and the quality time spent with people you care about, that have imprinted your life in ways you will find out about for many years to come.

That’s what “Parker and the Man” is all about - the chance to ‘kick it’ with friends and trade opinions about sports and life. Rob Parker is an award-winning journalist, ESPN contributor, and he gets to vote for Baseball’s Hall-of-Fame each year. His passion stems from his days as an athlete.

Mark ‘The Man’ Wilson, matriculated at Michigan State, and was a member of the 1979 Big Ten Championship baseball team. He spent over 20 years in TV in Miami, Los Angeles, and of course here in Detroit on Fox 2.

Hanging out with these guys is like going to Disneyland every day, and as we cover the Pistons, Tigers, Lions, and the rest of all of sport, our favorite part is getting to interact up close and personal with the people that make the sports world go around.

You’re invited to join in too, by calling 313-298-1200, and you too can be a part of the club. Since July 2004, I’ve co-hosted over 220 “Parker and the Man” shows, and Novi sports teams get their props when I’m on the air. One night Alex Prasad joined us on-air for a segment and we ‘kicked it.’

Most of us wish we could suit up just one more time. But the next best thing is the locker room / clubhouse camaraderie that athletes of all levels enjoy.

It’s like going home, and there’s no place like home.
