All Tied Up

The last time the Novi Wildcat Girls Soccer team tied anybody was back in early 2005. The juniors were freshman, the seniors were sophomores and I’m sure they remember. Since then? Ah, nuthin… Just 51 straight wins and Two State Championships, that’s all.

Which is exactly why there is such a buzz about a tie. But the team didn’t ask for all the attention, quite the contrary. They just go out and do their job. And for a group of youngsters this accomplished, a group that isn’t even old enough to vote and hasn’t even finished High School yet, they are extremely well-grounded and humbled by their accomplishments.

But now quantum physics are involved. They are so closely scrutinized and observed by competitors, fans, innocent bystanders and anonymous bloggers, that their every move is dissected and analyzed mostly by people who are quick to judge regardless of the facts…they rarely have all the facts.

You know you’ve made it when a simple ‘tie-game’ in March is big news. Great success usually comes with a price, and sometimes people can’t handle it. But I believe this team personifies that old adage proffered by NFL veterans that claim after scoring a TD; ‘act like you’ve been there before, and act like you’re going back.’

They say you learn more after a loss, because you replay the game over and over in your mind, analyzing the outcome more succinctly and wondering what you could have done differently.

From the game plan, to execution, to physical and mental preparedness, to how you reacted when things started to breakdown, the inner thought is relentless, at least until the next contest.

So, the team will learn from their tie to a very inspired, very talented Ann Arbor Pioneer team. Make no mistake, Ann Arbor Pioneer deserves a lot of credit, and the girls would be the first to give it to them.

But wait, they didn’t even lose, they tied!

So where do they go from here? Home, dinner, maybe a show? I don’t want to hear anything about wake up calls, take that garbage out of here. These are kids! They’ll be fine, they know what to do and what it takes to reach their potential.

So, they’ll look inward and analyze, and learn. They know they have a target on their backs, and people are out to get them. Their opponents are hungry, and the healthy respect will result in some tough matches this season.

This group knows they don’t have a God-given right to simply show up and win, they know they’re going to have to earn it, and they’re willing to do the heavy lifting.

But make no mistake, they’ve been there before, and they’re going back.

You’ll see…
