It’s important to be representin’

3/25/2007

In February 1977, it was a thrill for me to have an opportunity to play in an international baseball tournament in Guadalajara. Before leaving, our coaches emphasized over and over, that our actions, our words, and our conduct would be a direct reflection of our school and the community we represented, regardless of the outcome.

In other words, whether we won or lost, we were on or off the field, or it was before, during of after a game, everything we did was a direct representation of where we were from, hence the nice observations I made recently.

 - While in San Diego two weeks ago, I saw the Michigan Wolverine Baseball team take on San Diego State at Petco Park. I said hello to Kevin Cislo, and it’s nice to see he’s acclimated himself successfully into college baseball. Although U of M lost 4-1, Cislo scored the only run, largely due to a hustle play going from 1st to 3rd on a single and finishing it off with a head-first slide. He was representin’ Novi quite nicely.

 - Mitch Maier made his Major League debut last September, but more importantly, he has impressed the Kansas City Royal brass with his work ethic, attitude, and willingness to work hard and learn. He’s been representin’ Novi quite nicely.

 - Emily Esbrook recently traveled to Brazil as a part of a US Soccer contingent. A senior on Novi's’ back-to-back State Championship team, she will attend Ohio State in the fall, and no doubt, she’ll be representin’ Novi quite nicely.

 - Michigan’s Josh Churella was a whisker away from bringing home a National Championship in wrestling, and although it didn’t happen, he was representin’ Novi quite nicely.

You don’t have to a major leaguer or national champion to represent Novi High School and the City of Novi with class and dignity. Representing your school and community with honor is a high calling no matter where you are, on or off the field.

For the record, in 1977 we defeated Georgia Southern, Texas A&M, Biola University, and the University of Guadalajara to win that tournament. I don’t remember the scores, but I do remember what our coaches told us about how we should carry ourselves, and the reflection we would cast upon the people we were representin’.

That part of the trip, I will always remember.
