3/18/2007 Now that March Madness is in full swing, the ‘most of you are going pro in something else other than sports’ education campaign is back in force. The truth is only a small percentage of athletes make it to the pros. But, that’s as a player. There are plenty of opportunities in administration, coaching, marketing, etc. There are lots of ways to stay involved in sports, and make a living even if you’re no longer playing. One way, is as a coach. If any Wildcat athletes can look inward and honestly understand that one of their coaches has had a positive impact on their life, they may want to consider becoming a coach themselves someday. I can tell you, my high school baseball coach / football offensive coordinator Tom Shine taught me the value of thinking big, and expecting big things to happen. One of my college coaches, Bob Pomeroy, taught me the
value of patience, and the time commitment it takes to reach your
potential. Other than Coach Shine, who I had dinner with 3 years ago, most of these gentlemen I haven’t even talked to in 20 years, but their wisdom resonated, and even today I can apply their lessons in the playing fields of business and the media. Novi High School is staffed with many dedicated, caring coaches and teachers that are devoting their careers to helping produce productive members in the game of life. Most of you are going pro, but not necessarily as a player. However, should you choose coaching as your career, you could have even more impact on those you interact with for decades to come. I am living proof of that theory. (c) 2007 Novi
