Crazy is Good

1/8/2007

It started years ago with Duke’s “Cameron Crazies.” Coach Mike Krzyzewski and his Duke Blue Devils wreaked havoc on the floor, while their fans wreaked havoc on the entire arena.

Complete with T-shirts and a raucous crowd, Novi introduced ‘Pat’s Pack’ Friday night in the Hoopsters home victory over Milford. Nothing like a little home team spirit… The fans love it, the opposing players notice it… and the home team?… inside they’re going crazy because when it comes to sports in Novi, crazy is good.

Now that the new year is underway, a couple of quick hitters have come to mind:

- We’ll be curious to see if size really matters as Coach Schluter’s Cats venture further into KVC play as well as the playoffs in March. His troops won three straight District Championships in 2002, 2003, and 2004 even though many folks thought his teams lacked ‘size.’ This year’s version has by far the biggest frontcourt in the schools history, so we’ll see if that actually does translate into big wins.

- We’ll be curious to see if the Wildcat Women’s Soccer team might ‘Three-Peat’ in 2007. I know the girls have too much class to think or talk that far ahead, but with 8 returning starters and a shrewd field general that does a great job keeping everybody focused, it will be very interesting. Perhaps Coach O’Leary’s best trait is the fact that he is an outstanding teacher and mentor as well. “Winning is nice,” he said, “but helping the kids grow up and have a happy life is great too.”

- Coach Rick Green’s baseball coaching staff will be a little lighter this season as well. Best of luck to departing assistants Mike Koceski and Scott Combs. These gentlemen have brought class, leadership, and excellent instruction to a program that has had great success in recent years, including the Major League Debut of Mitch Maier (2000) for the Kansas City Royals this past season.

It’s going to be another crazy year for the Wildcat family… and crazy is good!
