Only in America

The results are in. There is now empirical and scientific data that participating in high school sports is an integral part of education and personal development.

Only in America do we combine athletics and academics the way we do. In order for kids to be eligible, they must follow a course of study and meet minimum GPA standards, but the results are encouraging.

Studies have shown that HS athletes as a whole perform better in the classroom as well. In fact, there is a higher of percentage of college graduates that participated in HS sports than from any other cross-section. And, cumulatively, HS athletes carry a higher GPA.

It has been discovered that prep athletes are less likely to experiment with illegal drugs or alcohol, and are less likely to be in trouble with the law.

Of the top executives that preside over the boardrooms in the biggest corporations in America, over 85% played sports in High School. High School athletes typically earn more in their careers, and a higher percentage of athletes comprise captainship of industry, as well as a fair share of business start-ups and sole proprietorships.

This is not an indictment against those that would prefer to engage in activities other than sport, but rather it underscores a basic premise that I have believed in for most of my life…

Sports teach life lessons; but in addition, the opportunity to be part of a larger entity, engaging in teamwork, conflict resolution, and learning positive habits that can guide one through life, are the main reasons why HS athletics provide such a terrific vehicle for our nation’s next generation.

The numbers are in, and they tell a story worth hearing.
