9/18/06 It has been the same for Novi football over the years. Now, it needs to be that way more than ever. No one knows how the rest of the season will play out, but there is one thing I do know for sure: These young men will be high school athletes for a short time, but they’ll be your sons, brothers, and friends for life. It is a privilege to play in front of several thousand people on Friday nights. And make no mistake, the objective is to win, otherwise you wouldn’t need to keep score. But the final tally never tells the full story. The benefits gleaned by all are too numerous to mention, win, lose, or draw. This may sound like a rationalization, but it’s not. This week in Ohio, The Kirk Herbstreit ‘Ohio vs. the Nation,’ will feature the top 8 programs in the US from Coast to Coast, taking the field against Ohio’s best. Herbstreit was an All-American HS QB from Centerville, Ohio in the 80’s before playing at Ohio St. But he remembers more than anything the incredible impact high school football can have on a community for parents, family, friends and children. He created this event for the experience, not the bragging rights. Years from now, people may not even remember Novi’s final record this season, win, lose, or draw. But the kids will remember how they were treated, and the fact the 12th man never missed a game. (c) 2006 Novi
