A cavalcade of
Where Are They Now

9/11/06

Back in June 2000, an exciting baseball game was played between Novi High School and Catholic Central High School. The winner would advance to the semi-finals.

In the second inning, Novi’s AJ Rowe hit a 360' fly ball to right field, and CC’s rightfielder reached over the fence and took away a 3-run home run. Yes, sometimes it is a game of inches, and that play seemed to change the complexion of the game.

Novi was eliminated that day, but if it was any consolation, the Shamrocks went on to become State Champions, and the same pitcher that defeated them, also won in the final game as well. His name is Charlie Haeger, and it is noteworthy because he made his Major League debut with the Chicago White Sox on May 10th of this year.

There is a certain irony, because Novi’s Mitch Maier, also a participant in that 2000 game, is knocking on the door of the Major Leagues as well. And ironically, the Chicago White Sox, the team Haeger pitches for, is still trying to unseat the first place Detroit Tigers.

In addition to Haeger, a present Major-Leaguer, and Maier, a future Major-Leaguer, there were several other players that went on to greater accomplishments as well.

The aforementioned AJ Rowe has served his country admirably as a soldier in Iraq, and for the record he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 38th round of the 2000 Major League Draft.

Novi’s Brendan Hadley went on to a stellar baseball career at Miami University in Ohio. Sophomore 2nd baseman Matt Gorman became Novi’s All-State Quarterback, and after high school matriculated at Central Michigan University, spending time on the football team as a safety.

Coaches Green, Koceski, and Combs remain, and their Men’s League Team competes regularly in national tournaments.

Given the fact that Catholic Central High School now makes its home in Novi, hopefully there will be additional match ups that showcase the talents of our local products. If past is prologue, then the future is very bright.
